Mark S. Choate (Washington, D.C.) is co-founder and CEO of The Choate Group, LLC, a research and communications consulting firm serving organizations in the areas of knowledge management, research methodology, funding strategies, and grant writing. He was the lead developer of The Choate Group’s Metawrite authoring tool, a cross-platform desktop wiki, and he consults with organizations seeking to implement weblog and wiki solutions. He is the former vice president of interactive media for The News & Observer. He lectures at Georgetown University’s Communication, Culture and Technology (CCT) graduate program where he teaches The Technology of News, which evaluates the impact of Internet technology on news dissemination.

Excellent MediaWiki Guide,

This is one of the best technical guides I have encountered and I have used hundreds of them. I am not a programer, but I work with open source software regularly and I am comfortable hacking code.
I have administered simple MediaWiki sites successfully, but this book has shown me how to make major improvements with my existing sites, and will serve as a guide in the creation of many planned wikis. This book has also extended my understanding of php. The author, not only clearly outlines how to work with MediaWiki software, but concisely and intelligently discusses the merits of options in configuring and working with the software. Even if you are not currently administering a MediaWiki site, his discussion of formating wiki text is excellent for those seeking more than the basics.

I was very impressed by the clarity of the writing and the organization of this book. Many great specific examples on how to get your wiki up and running in MediaWiki, plus lots of helps for customization. My first experiece with a Wrox book. I will look to them for future resource needs.
If you can only afford one book to help you with MediaWiki this is the book to buy.

I just received the text. It has "beginner" information about what I consider fundamental structures of wikis and it includes resources where to find more info. I read it by jumping around in the book and I have had no problem. I find what I want and then see something interesting and move to it, so it is not a linear read like an instruction manual, more like a first pass resource manual for beginners. Looking for the next level up. I rate this a 4 for starters.
