4.0 out of 5 stars Great how-to book for therapy hypnosis
An outstanding reference for novice and professional hypnotists alike. This book has the most up-to-date techniques on hypnosis and includes several methods of induction and some very practical scripts for conducting hypnotherapy sessions ranging from weight-loss to stopping smoking to dealing phobias and traumatic experiences. It even covers getting individuals to recall...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the most effective writer
First, it's only fair to say that I found this book interesting in many aspects. It does add some knowledge and understanding to the field of hypnosis, however, the author is not very effective at illuminating his ideas. On the one hand, he writes as though his audiance all have PhD's, because he does not do very well at defining his terms, or elaborating on his...

It even covers getting individuals to recall blocked memories or increasing the level of detail recalled in memories. This is written from a very professional clinical perspective. Several tests and evaluations are also given to test what type of hypnosis your subject is most susceptible to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn Real Hypnotism and How to Help Others (and yourself), March 14, 2001

This review is from: Professional hypnotism manual: Introducing physical and emotional suggestibility and sexuality (Paperback)
John Kappas' book on professional hypnotism is not just another hypnotist's manual. It offers the beginner and professional alike a strong grounding in hypnotism. I've read hundreds of books on hynotism through the years and this is the very best. Some of the techniques that I've used in the other books only worked on about half the people I've tried it on. Kappas' Professional Hypnotism Manual worked on every single person I've tried it on. It also separates the myths from the realities of hypnotism.

If you ever wanted to learn about hypnotism - GET THIS BOOK!

After reading this book - I decided to become a student at John Kappas' school in Tarzana, CA - Hypnosis Motivation Institute. It's a year long school leading to a certification in Hypnotherapy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Prime Text for Hypnosis, October 17, 2002
By
Alvin Smith (Ventura, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Professional hypnotism manual: Introducing physical and emotional suggestibility and sexuality (Paperback)
This book is an excellent guide to modern hypnosis. The discovery of physical, emotional and intellectual suggestibility by Dr. Kappas has made it easy for therapists to cause their suggestions to patients to be far more productive. I have used the methods in my sports psychology work effectively. I recommend this book to all hypnotists and therapists.

Al L Smith, C.Ht. author of "The Winning Zone".

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Primer still available NEW from Hypnosis Motivation Institute, August 21, 2008
This review is from: Professional hypnotism manual: Introducing physical and emotional suggestibility and sexuality (Paperback)
First, the book is still available for sale NEW for 27.95 at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, the school Dr Kappas founded in Tarzana. This book is not out of print or rare. However, it is a must have text for professional hypnotherapists. Dr Kappas' book contains information not found in any other hypnosis texts (unless Dr Kappas wrote them!) about subconscious behavior. Dr Kappas 'redefines our understanding of hypnosis and how it works with his "Message Unit Theory of Hypnosis", as well as introduces his revolutionary model of "Emotional and Physical Suggestibility and Sexuality."' The techniques contained in the book provide the most complete background for all hypnotherapy. A must read for therapists who wish to be very effective!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sex, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Professional hypnotism manual: Introducing physical and emotional suggestibility and sexuality (Paperback)
This is worth the read if only because of his unusual take on SEXUALITY. Kappas includes tests to define a person's hypnotitic suggestibility and sexuality styles which he says affect the method you use in hypnotic therapy and inductions. An interesting point of view, if you believe hypnosis is a real and valid therapy. This is the first time I have heard sexuality described in this way and it is unique and very ENLIGHTENING. As a therapist, it is worth reading simply for that. But more important, John Kappas was married to Florence Henderson (aka Carole Brady of the Brady Bunch) which is pretty cool, don't you think?

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the most effective writer, September 5, 2006
This review is from: Professional hypnotism manual: Introducing physical and emotional suggestibility and sexuality (Paperback)
First, it's only fair to say that I found this book interesting in many aspects. It does add some knowledge and understanding to the field of hypnosis, however, the author is not very effective at illuminating his ideas. On the one hand, he writes as though his audiance all have PhD's, because he does not do very well at defining his terms, or elaborating on his concepts. On the other hand, he does not provide any information of the efficacy of the questionaires he provides that an individual with a professional degree would find useful in vetting his theoretical views.
He points to Mesmer and Braid as being the the seminal hypnotists, but comepletely skips Milton Erikson who he borrows heavily from, perhaps without being aware of it -- I don't know.
This book needs to be rewritten and greatly expanded upon to deserve the title "'Professional' Hypnotism 'Manual'." In my opinion, it is neither professional, nor a manual.
Nevertheless, I probably am underrating this book by giving it two stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Read., February 13, 2007

This review is from: Professional hypnotism manual: Introducing physical and emotional suggestibility and sexuality (Paperback)
On the subject of Hypnotherapy, this book is one of the most informative publication I have read yet. This book breaks down the science of Hypnotism, to give a fundamental understanding of how the process works. Not the old lame "becuase I said so" methods of old. I look forward to reading more titles by Dr. Kappas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for the practicing hypnotherapist, February 3, 2011

This review is from: Professional hypnotism manual: Introducing physical and emotional suggestibility and sexuality (Paperback)
I have read many books on hypnosis (I am a certified hypnotherapist)and this book covers the foundational topics very, very well. But you will only understand this book if you have at least a basic hypnosis certification course under your belt and have some experiential experience (i.e., real life application of hypnosis with clients). Otherwise much in the book will go over your head. But for the practicing hypnotist, this book is an absolute gem.

this book is so good I bought it twice! Actually I lent out the 1st copy and it was never returned. So I bought it again. I am a working hypnotist and found that this book is really a valuable resource. I believe Kappas was the one to prove that 100% of population could be hypnotized-previously it was thought only 50%. His results are based on determining the type of suggestibility that the individual best responds to. His detailed test and way to determine their mode of suggestibility is what has convinced many that his claims are supported. I felt all of the information was easily understood, and valuable, valuable, etc. to anyone working with hypnosis. It is another extremely useful tool to add the hypnotist's tool belt.
