From the Author

"The Professional's Business Handbook: A Guide to Successful Planning" is the result of my love for business and my belief that businesses can be operated more effectively.

Early on, I experienced an entrepreneurial environment. My uncle, who had owned a neighborhood delicatessen in New York, started a related manufacturing company making pickles and condiments. When he retired to Los Angeles, he brought family members into the operation, and I learned to love the spirit of entrepreneurism and excitement of the daily operations of the business.

Later, I went to law school, graduated and entered the profession of the law. I learned that most professionals care deeply about their respective professions, and work long and hard to deliver quality services to their clients. During the 1980s, I was asked to participate in the disciplinary process of the State Bar. I quickly discovered that most consumer complaints against lawyers were caused by poor management practices. Similar statistics appear in other professions as well. Because of this -- and the fact that I was continually being asked by my legal clients for advice in their business affairs -- I decided that I could make a contribution by consulting on the practice management efforts of all professionals.

I began to speak to professionals around the country, talking about the need for greater client awareness and concern; greater need for business-like practices; and the greater need for planning one's future success. During these presentations, professionals frequently asked me for an easy-to-understand outline for the creation of a business plan. That's basically what this Handbook is. It's designed to help you -- whether a start-up, sole or small-firm practitioner or chair of a department within a larger professional practice -- accept the two complementary principles of being a professional while concurrently planning for the future of your practice as a business in a business-like manner. My goal is to provide you with a tool that will facilitate your ability to describe a plan of action for your practice that is workable, manageable and that you will use and refer to frequently.

This Handbook is the result of my support of entrepreneurial professionals everywhere who work so hard and are so devoted to improving the lives of their clients. The Handbook comes from my hope that I can help the professional make his or her practice more effective in the delivery of quality services for clients, and my hope that I can help the professional be more profitable in the process. I welcome any comments and suggestions that you may have.
