Book Description

Significant Learning Series. July 1997
Spanish for Health Professionals.- This great CD-ROM and book combination is for English-speaking health professionals with the need and desire to communicate with their patients who primarily speak Spanish. It works just as well in the other direction for helping Spanish-speaking health professionals understand what their English-speaking clients are trying to communicate.

Spanish for Health Professionals is designed for busy Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Psychologists, and Social Workers-and their support and office staff. It uses simple exercises and dialog situations to create a language laboratory where you learn the specific phrases and questions you need to help your patients.

Spanish for Health Professionals contains hundreds of typical questions that can be answered "yes" or "no" by the client. It makes these questions and phrases easy to access and easy to learn. Just choose the general health areas you typically work in, listen and vocalize.

The CD - Main Program

The main program is divided into 18 chapters, including subjects such as: Mental Health, Communications for the Receptionist, Emergencies, Men's Issues, Women's Issues, the Dentist, and Sexuality & Contraception. Each chapter contains many key phrases that help meet patient needs associated with that chapter's topic. Listen to the audio accompanied by images. You can choose to watch and hear either the Spanish or the English first. Choose to hear Spanish only, English only, or both.

Practice over and over with the CD-ROM in the privacy of your home or office until you feel comfortable with your newly learned expressions. A Vocabulary section contains individual pronunciations of hundreds of medical words.

The Book - A Ready Reference

The book that accompanies this CD-ROM is a huge bonus. It's well-organized for quick reference when you're away from the computer. In addition, there is an English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English dictionary that contains healthcare words and expressions. It provides healthcare givers and office staff new levels of communication when attending to Spanish- or English-speaking clients. Speaking key phrases in a patient's native tongue shows them you care and can lead to faster, more thorough treatment. Ideal for personnel training programs, schools and intensive learning workshops.

680 dialog situations, 1200 vocabulary terms, 200 common expressions, Over 5500 audio files.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Here is a disc that responds to our changing cultural landscape. It is designed for those in the healthcare field who want to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking clients. There are more than 600 dialog situations (in English and Spanish) commonly used in healthcare settings, 1200 health vocabulary terms, and 200 common terms and expressions. The questions are those that can generally be answered "yes" or "no" by the client. Arrangement is by situation or topic: At the Receptionist, Children's Health, At the Dentist, Women's Health, Men's Health, Mental Health, Muscles and Bones, Back and Neck, Sexuality and Contraception, and Headaches and Tension. A 242-page workbook is included. Bottom Line: A disc with a narrow yet expanding audience. Health centers, hospitals, health workers, public libraries, and health libraries will find it useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for communicating with Latino clientele, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
I am a clinical social worker who works with Spanish speaking clients, primarialy around issues of sexual abuse. This compact book has helped me in the medical and mental health portions of my job. The authors have managed to choose phrases and expressions that are really right on target for getting the job done. The dictionary in the back of the book has the words I really need to assess my clients- these are not words that help you order dinner in a resort! I found the CD/ROM very useful, being able to replay a phrase as often as necessary to correct my pronunciation has made me feel more confident.

This review is from: Spanish for Health Professionals. Ingles para Profesionistas de la Salud. / Book and Multimedia CD-ROM. (Significant Learning Series) (Paperback)
This book tries to cover Spanish for Health Professionals from the receptionist to the Doctor/Dentist. It does not adequately cover any of these areas. It tries to teach by showing the reader a conversation, but it goes no further. It has no discussion of common phrases or grammar, and the conversations are too situation specific. It does have a list of colors, months, numbers, etc. in the back of the book. The software portion is more of the same. I have limited knowledge of Spanish, and bought this book for a medical trip to Peru and found it to be practically useless. I would recommend spending your money on a good dictionary or phrasebook, or looking into some of the Spanish language software that is available.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Spanish for Health Professionals. Ingles para Profesionistas de la Salud. / Book and Multimedia CD-ROM. (Significant Learning Series) (Paperback)
For a product titled "Interactive Language Exercises" and referring to its "workbook", I expected a textbook-like format with actual "exercises"-- fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, translate this phrase, etc. All this has is a list of phrases in English and Spanish. All the CDROM does is pronounce said list of phrases. The only "exercise" is rote memorization of these phrases. There is no instruction on grammar or why you say things the way you do, so there is absolutely no flexibility in learning how to say anything other than the exact phrase they have.

I personally already speak quite a bit of Spanish, so I could use these phrases to pick up some more vocabulary, but I could do that just as easily and much more conveniently from a medical dictionary or from my other variety of much cheaper medical phrasebooks. For someone who doesn't speak much Spanish I think this would be terrible. Who can rote memorize "680 dialog situations, 1200 vocabulary terms, 200 common expressions"? This TEACHES absolutely nothing!
