4.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Parrot
My 2.5-yeard old LOVES Mr. Parrot and sits through the whole video repeating some words here and there. I only wish there were videos out there for younger kids that teach more of the language than just "Hi", "My name is...", and numbers. This one is cool and engaing, but short and only covers a very small part of the introductory Spanish language.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Alright.
It's not a bad product, but not what I was looking for. This is intended for slightly older children than I have. I was mainly looking for building my kids Spanish vocabulary. This is above their heads, but would be better for kids in the 6-9 range.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD!, May 2, 2006
This review is from: Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish: Learn Spanish with Songs, Dances, Games and Puppets (DVD)
I am using the DVD with my 6 & 7 year old daughters. We love it! They beg to watch this DVD over and over. They have learned the numbers, colors, and many simple phrases. I popped the DVD into my computer and was able to print out a complete transcript and learning guide. We are using this in our home school. I will use this until the children tire of it, and then move on to a more formal Spanish instruction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to watch and learn, March 30, 2006
This review is from: Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish: Learn Spanish with Songs, Dances, Games and Puppets (DVD)
I am reviewing the video not the DVD. My 1-yr-old likes to watch the video although she doesn't speak any language yet. We have lots of children videos and this is one of her favorites. By watching the video with her, I have picked up quite a few spanish words and phrases, such as numbers, colors, introductions, and greetings. I think this video is nicely done. I only wish they had subtitles or closed caption so we'd know how the words are spelled. I hope they have this on the DVD version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, January 11, 2009
This review is from: Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish: Learn Spanish with Songs, Dances, Games and Puppets (DVD)
I teach pre-school Spanish, and this was the first DVD I recommended to parents. The story line is that there are four children - John and Sarah, an English speaking boy and girl; and Miguel and Rosa, a Spanish speaking boy and girl - and Professor Parrot helps them become friends by teaching the English speaking children Spanish. They start out with two songs, one teaching introductions and one teaching numbers 1-20. After the numbers song, they visit a friend of Professor Parrot, a native Spanish speaker (who doesn't speak any English on the DVD), that tells the story of Goldilocks. After the story, the kids review phrases from the story, hearing them in English, then acting them out while saying them in Spanish (knock on the door, sit in the chair, etc.) The DVD ends with two more songs, one naming the parts of the body, and one about colors.
Between segments the children speak to Professor Parrot, and he responds, in their own languages.

John and Sarah: What's that?
Miguel and Rosa: ¿Qué es eso?
Professor: (to John and Sarah)It's a storm. (to Miguel and Rosa) Es una tormenta.

I like the fact that througout the DVD Miguel and Rosa only speak Spanish; and the story-line that John and Sarah need to learn Spanish because they don't understand them when they're speaking English. One of the challenges I have with young students is getting across the point that not everyone speaks English, and Spanish is not just something we learn for fun; that there are actually people in the world that would only be able able to talk with in Spanish. Even though this DVD does contain both English and Spanish, it still gets that concept across quite well.
As other reviewers have said, my main problem is that it teaches not much more than the basics; but to be fair, you can only go so far with one thirty minute DVD. After this DVD, my class moves onto the Whistlefritz series.

4.0 out of 5 stars We want a whole series of Proffesor Parrot in Spanish!, August 2, 2006

This review is from: Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish: Learn Spanish with Songs, Dances, Games and Puppets (DVD)
My son, aged 2, loves the "bird" videotape! I'm trying to teach him spanish but I'm having trouble finding visual materials in Spanish for him. This video touches the basics in an entertaining way so it's engaging for kids. The acting and singing isn't top notch but it serves the purpose: my son has been belting out the "colores" song at the supermarket!
I just wished they would make a whole series of it with more advanced vocabulary because this video is quite short and makes you want to see more!
I speak Spanish so I don't need subtitles, but I agree with other reviewers that it would be nice to have them.

Overall: the most engaging teaching material we have found so far.

Bought this for a 5 year old who has surprised us all with her yen to learn to languages. Spanish seems to be the one that intrigues her the most, so I thought we would work on it. After the first viewing of the film, she picked up on how to greet someone and her numbers. She would rather watch this DVD than Nemo, any of the Princesses or Curious George. Well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 Year Olds LOVE This DVD!, February 20, 2008
This review is from: Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish: Learn Spanish with Songs, Dances, Games and Puppets (DVD)
We have tried several spanish learning tools. By far this is the best one. If you want to teach small children some spanish then this is the perfect video. Professor Parrot speaks clearly so my children can copy exactly how he pronounces the words. There are enough english words so that my kids know what the spanish words mean. The music, dancing and story telling keep my childrens attention through out the entire video. I can watch it with them to help them practice or I can let them watch it by themselves and I know that they are getting a great learning experience. I have a 4 year old boy and a 4 year old girl and they both love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!, June 18, 2009

I have a 3 and 4 year old who love this DVD. They ask to watch it almost everyday. They sing along, laugh and play with it. My kids have learned most of their colors; they can count to 20 in spanish; they know how to ask "what's your name?" and tell someone what their name is. They are learning the major parts of the body. It's been wonderful. I really wish they had a whole series of dvds.

We bought Spanish for beginners DVD and it was too difficult for kids who can't read.

My 2 year old son loves Professor Parrot. The songs are short enough to keep his attention and he is learning to repeat many of the spanish words. I would recommend this for any toddler/young child who likes to sing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this DVD - you will be very pleased with it!, August 20, 2007
This review is from: Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish: Learn Spanish with Songs, Dances, Games and Puppets (DVD)
I bought this DVD for my daughter who just turned two, and am so happy with it. We've owned it for only two weeks and she is already starting to count and sing in Spanish. It is her favorite thing to watch. What's great about this DVD is that not only will you and your children have a fun time learning Spanish from it (the tunes are very catchy) but it will also get your child moving and dancing along with the children in the DVD. I wish there were more DVDs out there like this one.
