One of my children’s and my favorite authors is Mercer Mayer. He has created so many fantastic children’s books, including our favorite Little Critter. We have read those books over and over again and still they are the favorite go-to books. Long before Little Critter there was Professor Wormbog and His Search for the Zipperump-A-Zoo.

Mercer Mayer has a way of taking some of the most frightening things for a child and turning them into endearing characters. He is known for his “Little Monster” and “Little Critters” series — the books with the cute characters who go through situations that every child experiences. What many don’t realize is “Professor Wormbog,” is the book that led to Mercer’s success with his “Little Monster” series. It tells the tale of how hard it is to find a Zipperump-a-Zoo. This re-released collectible version of the book is the first of many books to come from Mercer and FastPencil PREMIERE, who will be publishing this line of “Classic Collectibles.”
The illustrations are endearing and recognizable as Mercer Mayer’s. We are looking forward to reading the story and becoming part of the mischief as we search for words and images Mayer is known for in his writing.
-Mommy's Memorandum

Since 1966, award-winning author Mercer Mayer has been writing and illustrating fantastical children’s picture books and has personally penned more than 300 titles to date. For 2011 his book Professor Wormbog in Search for the Zipperump-a-Zoo -- which was originally published in 1976 -- was reintroduced and is currently available in hard cover as well as e-Book formats. This particular title is the same original classic story that launched Mayer's renowned Little Monster Series that has sold millions of copies.

Like his other titles, Professor Wormbog was born out of the author's personal experiences growing up in Arkansas. As always, Mayer's animal characters in this book are as monster ugly as they are approachable and charming. In fact with his illustrative style, it's no surprise that this story and many others he's written -- such as the Little Critter series -- are widely regarded as classics for three generations and counting. Not only are Mayer's books lots of fun to read, each has valuable life lessons that help children who read them to develop socialization and language skills within a creative story-telling context.

More About the Author

MERCER MAYER began writing and illustrating children's books in 1966, and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any of the award-winning author/illustrator's books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters.

"Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid," says Mercer. "Now that I'm a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like."

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his studies, he set out with pen and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children's books, reflecting many of the adventures he experienced as a child.

In 2007, Mr. Mayer was commissioned by Laura Bush to create the artwork used for the National Book Festival held on September 29 on the National Mall. He was an honored guest to the event, giving a demonstration and autographing hundreds of books for fans who attended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Childhood Book May 23, 2011

Note that this book's older editions have 5 star ratings. Why this book was out of print for so long is a mystery. This was my favorite book from my childhood. Loved by both boys and girls, this book has both great illustrations and a fun story. A great gift for 4-7 year old children (But we just pulled this one off the shelf last week to read over, at the request of my 11 year old. Some stories are just wonderful to return to again and again).

5.0 out of 5 stars Add This To Your Literary Favorites List August 12, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I love the books written by Mercer Mayer and this one is another excellent example of this author's ability to weave a creative and imaginative story with a funny professor and the creatures in his world.

Once again Mercer Mayer has written a book which shows amazing details in the drawings. Look carefully at the darling creatures he has created and the little signs in the areas the professor visits as he tries to locate the Zipperump-a-Zoo. The creatures are so cute you would welcome them into your home! Mercer Mayer weaves his creative magic so you can actually see the personalities of the creatures in the professor's collection and also the creatures he meets along the way. Note the facial expressions on the beasties and the professor as they reveal their feelings.

This is a story that children and adults will definitely enjoy together. It will take you on a delightful journey to find out what the Zipperump-a-Zoo looks like and does the professor eventually find one for his collection.

So, Professor Wormbog collected beasties. He has beasties in his collection labeled from A though Y. The professor had no Zipperump-a Zoo to complete his collection. Thus the professor decided to search all over the world for the one beastie which would make his collection complete.

In the professor's travels, he dug a pit, went fishing, pretended to be a bird in flight, hiked to a craggy peak, and went into a deep cave but found not one Zipperump-a- Zoo. After all his travels he decided to go home. The poor professor was tired, weary ,and very sad. He is so tired he fell asleep in his chair in front of his fireplace. Well, while he was asleep, guess who decided to visit him and frolic in his house . . . .

Will the professor wake up in time to see this beastie who has visited him? Is this the Zipperump-a-Zoo? What do you think?

You really will enjoy this new addition to the already popular and engaging Mercer Mayer books published. You will want to add this to your collection of literary favorites.

My son grew up having this story read to him at bedtime, he is now sharing the same story with his children. I purchased two copies; gave one to my son and kept one at my home - now all of my grandchildren are looking for a Zupperump-a-Zoo!

The books were very well packed and arrived in great condition.
