GitheadProfile Swim~ Githead is a new band that started a few years ago. Colin Newman spent ten years doing records on his Swim~ label. These were mostly techno and dance records that included many diverse influences: Guitars and techno, drum and bass. The past two years we saw the return of Wire, which Newman was the singer. The success of the new Wire material was a shock. That took up some time. In the parallel world of Swim~ things had been quiet. To celebrate the tenth year anniversary of Swim~ a new band was formed. The members of Githead are some of the people who contributed the most to Swim~ like Newman, and Malka Spigel and Robin Rimbaud. Of course Githead is a separate new thing. The music is mostly like pan-euro rock, which is reminiscent of Minimal Compact and Newman's solo records of the late 1980s. A weird quality of all the vocals is that they are all spoken, and not so much sung. This works best in songs like "Cosmology for Beginners." It almost has a funky rap vibe. All the songs are pretty good. This record is more listenable that some of the other art rock records on Swim~. This is levelheaded music. Newman and company has succeeded again.
