WE've had this oven/microwave for 4 months now and absolutely love it. We got it so that we could have a second oven without doing a major renovation. So far it's worked well as a microwave and great as an oven. I'll assess them seperatly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great when it works, buy extended warranty
The features on the microwave are great. However, after 2.5 years the Magnetron (which actually warms the food became damaged). Spent about $250 on labor to repair it (part comes w/ 5 yr warranty). However, 2yrs later the magnetron blew out again. Spent $100 for tech guy to come out, and it would be another ~ $250, at which point it didn't make sense and figured I'd just...

--AS a microwave, it's a little slower cooking than others we have had, but heats evenly, has a turntable, and rack. We really love the dial control...kind of like an ipod, simple and efficient.

--As an 2nd oven it is perfect for us and we actually use it frequently as the primary oven because 1) It heats up faster and cooks faster 2) It is more energy efficient with a smaller space to heat adn 3) it vents outside so it doesn't heat up the house in the summer at all.

As for the price, it is expensive, but was a much cheaper way to get a second oven for us and we are very happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's easy to change the light bulb yourself!, September 2, 2010
By
Thomas R. Kueny (Milwaukee, WI USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven - Stainless Stee

After reading the mixed reviews for this oven, the only unfavorable ones complained that if the oven light needed to be replaced, the unit had to be taken down from the wall. Well we purchased one anyway because to save $175 or more, I would have no problem taking it down myself to change the light bulb; it's not that hard.
We installed it, and wouldn't you know it, ...it stopped working after one successful test. We phoned the GE appliance department, also easy to do on-line, and they were here the next morning.
The repairman opened the oven by removing the grill from across the top. Two half-inch screws hold it in place from the top edge. He was then able to open the front control panel so he could adjust a misaligned door switch. He did not have to take the oven down from the cabinet.

Here is the revelation: the halogen light-bulb, in question, is located behind the grill right beneath the opening where the charcoal filter would be mounted, if you used one. Anyone with a Philips screwdriver can take these two screws out and save himself or herself a $175 service call.
The repairman suggested that we leave the screws out to make it easier next time. The grill fits snuggly without the screws.
When our new kitchen is finished, we will give it a hard test, like cooking with the microwave and the convection oven combined. For now, we are giving it five stars because it appears that this is an excellent product and the repair service is terrific.
This review will be revised if any of this proves to be untrue later in time.

Also, my cleaning person broke the turntable and it's $110 to replace!!! However, the features on this microwave are great, and now that I'm shopping for a new one, I'm hoping to find one w/ similar options, like the night lite, reminder beep when food is done, add 30 secs option during cook time. The popcorn preset button gives me perfect popcorn everytime! If you get a GE, do yourself a favor and get the extended warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Second Oven, May 8, 2009
By
Jamonitjo (Nassau County, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven - Stainless Stee
We bought this w/ other GE Profile products (Dishwasher & Refrigerator) from PC Richards and I'm very glad we did.
We just did a full renovation and my contrator said this installed very easily and the venting was a breeze; straight up and then over 8 Ft.
It's constantly in use w/ two kids around. The dial knob makes it very easy to pick a cook time and temperature. Just turn and press. Convection bake works great for the hamburgers and meatloafs we usually have and it beats heating up the kitchen w/ the stove.
The micro-express button works in 30 second increments and if you need more time you just keep pressing it or spin the dial.
The popcorn preset button is a little short to pop them all but definitely not a deal breaker.
I would certainly recommend this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible design, not able to change the lightbulb inside, December 10, 2009
This review is from: GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven - Stainless Stee
Overall, the microwave works fine like any micro should, no real complaints there. However, we have had this micro for a little over a year. The inside light burned out as well as the task light that lights up the stovetop below. I searched for the replacement lightbulbs locally at home depot, and several other stores, no luck. I searched online, found the correct lightbulbs. Ordered 4 lights, 2 spare for when they burn out again. I went to install them. The bottom task light was a breeze, done in a few minutes. I opened the inside of the micro and could not find anywhere to access the light, nor could I see where it was even at?

Now reading the reviews here, that you need to remove the entire micro from the wall, have a technician install a lightbulb? to the tune of $200? That is insane! What an incredibly terrible design!! Geez, the inside light is not that big of a deal, I for sure am not going through the work of taking it down and paying a technician to install a freaking lightbulb. What was GE thinking when they came up with this LAME design?

I have to give this 1 star.

1.0 out of 5 stars CHEAP PARTS EXSPENSIVE REPAIR, March 29, 2009
This review is from: GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven - Stainless Stee
We bought this convection microvave aproximately 18 months ago, electrical is poor on it , within 6months of purchase replaced lite above stove, after 18 months the interior light went out,$85.00 for bulb and over $200.00 service call. The oven has to be removed from the wall according to teir web site.I'd say that's a bit expensive minimum $285.00 to but a light bulb in. The Microwave cost us $600.00.We bought this one because we have always bought GE Profile Kitchen appliances. This definitely determine future appliance purchases.Model # JVM1790 Convection /Microwave.

2.0 out of 5 stars Probably Not Worth The Money, February 10, 2009
By
This review is from: GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven - Stainless Stee
I have owned two of these. The first one, worked fine. The microwave was good and I really loved the convection oven for small item cooking. The inside light did burn out and I think you have to take it to a repair shop to get it replaced, I'm not sure, I never got it fixed because I could never locate it. I moved and bought another one and within 2 months the main board went completely bad. It is a $200 repair and as I read reviews on the internet, this is not that uncommon. For the price, I would look for a different brand with better reviews and price.

2.0 out of 5 stars GE REALLY let us down, May 24, 2010
This review is from: GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven - Stainless Stee
We waited a long time before spending $600+ on a microwave. In Feb of 2009, we bought this oven. Initially after buying it we were ecstatic. We really liked the convection function in particular. However, immediately at the expiration of the warranty (12 months), the convection function quit working. We had used the convection function less than 20 times. Now we're left with a simple microwave that we paid $600 for. Given the high cost of repair, getting this unit fixed is not an option.

I realize that sometimes things do stop working at no fault of the manufacturer. But this was not a cheap oven, and GE is not an off-brand. The warranty should be longer (even it's just a parts warranty), and customers should be able to expect more than 1 year of reliable service from a major appliance produced by a major brand.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend GE convection/microwave ovens. The warranty is not long enough to protect your $600+ investment. Find yourself a manufacturer who offers a better warranty or buy separate microwave and convection appliances. Don't waste your money on these GE units.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Great - Very Versatile - 1 Year Review, October 22, 2010
This review is from: GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven - Stainless Stee
I was surprised to read so much negative regarding this product, which prompted me to write a review. I must say that my first issue with the GR Profile Spacemaker JVM1790SK, is the dreaded exterior (stovetop) bulb. Bulbs burn out - I get it. And now I will find a replacement and replace it myself. I already unscrewed the (1) screw and slid the protective plate off. I pulled the small bulb and see that it burned out. I'm sure the design is taking advantage of built-in obsolescence, that guarantees residual income...but that's another story.

PROS:
MICROWAVE Works and has lots of power options
CONVECTION Works and will even brown during baking and roasting options
POPCORN Button - Pops nearly to the very last kernel
COMBINATION FAST BAKE - Utilizes Convection & Microwave in intervals
VENT - 3 Speeds / 2 removable/cleanable Metal Filters (washing them now)
STOVETOP BULB - 2 Brightness Levels / Easily Replaced / Automatic On/Off You Set Times!
ROTATING TURNTABLE- Rotates during Microwave & Convection Modes - Reverses when door is opened and closed - Also Option to Turn it ON/OFF
(2) Racks!
LARGE INTERIOR
GREAT LOOK - Silver & Black

CONS:
Trays Don't Slide Out - I think this is a design flaw which is why I didn't give 5 Stars
Bulb Burned Out - LOL
When I saw this Model in Demo Mode, there were some cool blue lights that followed the dial around as you made your selections. I was disappointed that it was strictly a demo and not a function. Would be helpful under low light.

If anyone know where I can purchase the replacement bulb for cheap, please reply. I am going to start my google searches now.

Enjoy!
MikeV

1.0 out of 5 stars Died after 3 yr, June 24, 2010
This review is from: GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven - Stainless Stee
I had the GE profile for 3 yr and now it sleeps with the fishes. In the three years it performed well. Three years is a ridiculously short life for a microwave. I have owned a few microwaves and this is the first time I have every had one actually die. The microwave produced a burning rubber smell and got really hot inside. I was told it was likely the magnetron and it would be cheaper to replace it. I went to Sears and asked about microwaves, the salesperson said I would recommend any of these except the GE products they have a lot of problems(samsung got the best rating from him). I said, "I know". I bought a whirlpool. This thing is too expensive to die after 3 yr. I would expect it if I paid 150 bucks.
