From School Library Journal
YA Brief profiles of 20 courageous women scientists including Sara Baker, who tracked down Typhoid Mary and battled the harassment and discrimination of other doctors to provide better health care to mothers and their babies; Ida Bengston, who researched Rocky Mountain spotted fever and developed tests for the diagnosis of botulism; and Leona Baumgartner, the first woman Commissioner of Health in New York City. O'Hern, a microbiologist, has researched her subjects from archives, letters, scientific documents, and interviews. She writes in a factual, low-key style, emphasizing these women's determined, steady research that opened the doors for other women in the sciences as well as improved public health. An excellent book to inform young adults about this important era in American scientific research.Mary T. Gerrity, Queen Anne School, Upper Marlboro, Md.
