Book Description

November 1, 1999
This is the remarkable story of the men, past and present, who discovered the fishing grounds and developed, through the trial and error, the techniques and equipment for catching and landing the big ones. This is a revised, expanded, and updated 25th anniversary edition.

It begins with the early pioneers of the sport: Henry William Herbert and "Tuna" George Farnsworth, and proceeds to colorful portraits of some of the grand old men of the sea, such as Charles Frederick Holder, Zane Grey, Ernest Hemingway, and Philip Wylie.

This new edition also features expanded saltwater flyfishing information in the chapter on Lefty Kreh. And it includes a new chapter on Walter Fondren's founding of the Coastal Conservation Association, the most influential and powerful sportfishing organization/lobby in the United States.

We may never again see the equal of the great fish caught by the anglers in this book. Gone are the great schools of giant bluefin tuna, and the huge broadbill swordfish. But the stories live on in the pages and photographs of this classic book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating History of Inshore and Offshore Fishing, January 19, 2000

This review is from: Profiles in Saltwater Angling : A History of the Sport - Its People and Places, Tackle and Techniques (Hardcover)
This book is just amazing. Its more than four hundred pages and I tore threw it in two days. Especially good were the chapters concerning striped bass fishing in the Northeast. I also enjoyed the chapters that included an interview-style format where the reader can get a better feel for various fishing personalities. Get this book here or somewhere. If your bored this winter, this will keep you entertained.

This is one of my favorite books. It's a history of saltwater sport fishing and I can't imagine any fisherman who fishes in the salt wouldn't love this book. I call it my waiting room book because I loose time when I read it so it's perfect for doctor, dentist or other waiting rooms when I don't know how long I'll have to sit.
