Included in this volume are monologues for Marian Anderson, Maya Angelou, Judith Baca, Susan Butcher, Juliette Gordon Low, Wilma Mankiller, Vilma Martinez, Barbara McClintock, Maria Mitchell, Julia Morgan, Alice Paul, Annie Smith Peck, Susan LaFlesche Picotte, Wilma Rudolph and Yoshiko Uchida.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Thousand Oaks Branch of the AAUW has struck golf again with the second volume of its acclaimed Profiles of Women Past & Present series. Included are 15 short monologues for all grade levels, presentation ships, sample letters and references. Athlete Wilma Rudolph, architect Julia Morgan and writer Yoshiko Uchida are among those profiled." -- Jo Ellen Heil, Ventura County Star, August 25, 1996

"This book contains a series of five-minute monologues featuring fifteen accomplished women such as Marian Anderson, Juliette Low and Yoshiko Uchida. Occupations include a Chicana mural artist, an early astronomer, an Iditarod champion and an Olympian Gold Medalist. The material may be presented by students, adult volunteers or even an inspired librarian. Showing the essence of an individual's life through drama can provide broader awareness." -- Sylvia C. Mitchell, Voice of Youth Advocates, December 1996

"This is a great "how-to" book. If you are at the point in life where you are called on to give women's history presentations at work, this is a good resource." -- Jonne Hower, Women in Natural Resources, Fall 1996

This second volume provides women's history monologues for group presentations, focussing on women such as Marian Anderson, Wilma Mankiller, Barbara McClintock and others. These are fifteen monologues designed to introduce students and adults alike to women's history: fine insights are imparted in the first-person. -- Midwest Book Review

From the Publisher

Profiles of Women Past & Present was inspired by an innocent comment made a young girl to her mother. In 1985, seven-year-old Stacey Hindy broke her arm. While waiting in the doctor's office, Stacey said she could be a nurse when she grew up because "only men could be doctors." Her mother, Sandy Hindy, an AAUW member, immediately saw a need to show her daughter and other children that women's aspirations need not be limited by gender stereotypes. She researched, wrote and presented several first person monologues highlighting the lives of women in history for students in grades one through six at her daughter's elementary school. One of the women she presented was Elizabeth Blackwell, America's first woman physician, demonstrating that girls could, indeed, be doctors.

The following year, the Thousand Oaks Branch of AAUW decided to build on what Sandy had done at one school. During National Women's History Month in March 1987, AAUW members portrayed five notable women in all of the public elementary schools in Thousand Oaks, California. The project has continued over the years and, with the publication of Profiles of Women Past & Present, has been duplicated by AAUW members and others in communities across the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great project for 5th & 6th grade girls!, September 18, 1999

This review is from: Profiles of Women Past & Present: Women's History Monologues for Group Presentations (Volume II) (Paperback)
Profiles of Women Past And Present gives you everything you need to present women's history in the classroom. There are 15 monologues, costumes ideas and even sample flyers, letters and press releases.

I used the book last year with 5th and 6th grade girls. I trained them to present the monologues and they went into individual classrooms. The girls were terrified at first but felt wonderful when the project was finished. The whole school benefits from hearing the monologues and learning about women in history. My students built confidence and poise as they presented the program. The book makes it so easy. I received credit for the project but the book was the true star. I recommend the book for history teachers at all grade levels but expecially 5th, 6th, and junior high. It is an easy way to help girls learn about women's place in history and produce a public speaking experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fabulous way to introduce inspirational women to anyone, May 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Profiles of Women Past & Present: Women's History Monologues for Group Presentations (Volume II) (Paperback)
Since the bios are short and written with unique anecdotes, these monologues are a perfect way to introduce the stories of inspirational women to anyone, children & adults, alike. They can help build young girls' self-esteem and give them the courage to go after their dreams while letting them know that those dreams do not have to be bound by gender. Start reading these stories to your children at bedtime and you'll learn a lot, too!
