I also looked on another member of my family with great admiration. He was a lawyer. His influence and my observations about the law as a caring profession helped me decide to go to law school.
I have always combined the practice of law with business ventures, and over the years I found that my law clients frequently asked for my advice in their business affairs. In the late 1980s, when I learned that at least half of all consumer complaints to state bars were caused by the poor management practices of lawyers, I decided that I could make a contribution to the profession. I started a new career as a law practice management consultant.
My presentations throughout the United States have usually included topics regarding the financial management of law practices including cash flow strategies. In my experience in giving these talks and seminars, I have noticed that people always ask me for an easy-to-understand outline for the topic of creating a business plan. That's basically what this Handbook is. It's designed to help you -- attorneys and law firms, start-ups, sole and small-firm practitioners, fee-based and contingency lawyers -- accept the two complementary principles of being a professional while concurrently planning for the future of the practice as a business. My goal is to describe a plan of action that is workable, manageable and that you will use and refer to frequently.
This work comes out of my love of the profession and my hope that I can help make your practice more profitable and more effective in the delivery of quality legal services for your clients. I welcome any comments and suggestions that you may have.
