Goodnight contraption. I have rheumatoid arthritis and so having this sinister disease, my toe adjacent to my big toe eventually curled over my big toe. I had an operation 3 months ago, which was not simple, and in the meantime, during surgical procedure, they also shaved a bit off of a small bunion on big toe.

I had no problem with bunion for we live in Florida and I wear sandals all the time, but even with Birks or sandals, my arthritic hammertoe was horribly disfiguring. Even dogs stared! Old people wept - and - I was one of them.

BUT NOW, the BIG TOE for some reason is curling over - for some strange companionship - to the adjacent toe that I just had operated on, to the point you can actually see the major difference in x-rays in one month. My big toe is now moving waaaayy over to the right - trying to overlap my toe I just had operated on! This can't be. I've created another problem after surgery, possible complications of infection, nasty stitches leaving nasty scars, wearing a surgical shoe for two weeks, taking antibiotics, and the pain the first night was horrific. And I didn't even have a bunion removed! The doctor said that I would have to have surgery, have my big toe broken and begin from there. No, thank you.

I wondered "how in the heck can they make a contraption that will pull my big toe to the right. I need a pulley situation." I was not one that combs the "feet" pharmacy aisles, so I didn't know what was out there. Bunion was now added to my vocabulary.

Well the doctor mentioned Dr. Scholls, but I got GOODNIGHT BUNION at Walmart for about $4.00 for a pair. In case one breaks, I'm in luck for I only need one.

First off, I have to face the fact that at present, there seems to be no perfect bunion, toe-straightener gizmo on the market. This particular product is really inexpensive. You even get two in the package. Do not expect them to look like the picture on the front which is more of the style of the Footsmart one. No, these are made of cheaper plastic. I've tried the Footsmart one. It has it's good points and it's bad points just like this cheaper one. I did think the foam around the big toe on the expensive Footsmart one came off WAY faster than it should have, but of course, I do own glue and could fix that.

These cheaper plastic ones hold my toe in the correct alignment more securely, but, even though you are not supposed to walk around with any of these types of splints on, lets face it: you have to. No one is going to dismantle the thing to get up for the bathroom or to let the cat out. One time I snapped the bottom piece off of one of these cheap splints because I was not hobbling around carefully enough. This will likely never happen with the Footsmart one, because the plastic is a little more flexible, but again, it does not hold the toe in alignment as securely, because of the flexibility of the plastic.

All of the splints I have ever used required me to jury-rig some extra padding around my foot with whatever foam and soft things I can find around the house because they cut into your skin something awful. I also had my foot fall asleep once or twice for having one on too tight - slightly disconcerting.

I bought this bunion regulator at the end of May. I have been wearing it every night for 2 1/2 months and there is a big difference in my bunion. First of all, the pain I used to have in it during the day is gone. The bone sticks out a lot less than when I started. I don't expect my bunion to completely go away but I know it has gotten smaller. I should note that during the first 2 months I massaged my foot every day as well so that probably helped shrink the size of the bunion. But for the price, this thing has held up very well and I highly recommend it to anyone before they consider bunion surgery or even highly priced orthotics.

I have a bunion on my right foot and this splint is starting to help alleviate the pain. I could only wear it for an hour or so the first couple of nights but I am gradually working my way up to longer periods of time. It does cause some discomfort at first but that's because it's re-aligning the toe. I've found the next morning my toe and bone feel much better and the relief lasts thru-out the day. It's not gone completely and I don't know if it ever will be, but this splint definitely helps. It's light enough that it's not cumbersome to wear to bed - but if you have to get up in the middle of the night, walk on your heel because I think the plastic could easily break. Still for me this is "way" better than pain medication and will hopefully prevent surgery down the road. I've only been using it a few weeks so hopefully with time I'll see some permanent relief. I would recommend it.
