4.0 out of 5 stars Suffice, January 19, 2009

As previously stated, this is a kit that will allow you to survive if you already know how to survive. Simply purchasing this kit will not do anything for you if you can't use the items. For example: included is wire for making a snare, but one needs to first know how to build a snare. These are the bare necessities and includes no food whatsoever (not even a piece of chocolate).

It's not the worst deal, as it includes a wire saw and a couple other items that are a tidbit pricey, but it's not worth $25 + $9 shipping. Take notes on what it includes and build your own with better items for a better price.

4.0 out of 5 stars cubicle farm survival, January 24, 2007

This is a minimalist kit which isn't really suited for everyone, it is also overpriced for the items in it. What it is good for is to get you thinking what YOU need in your survival kit and to understand that you can make it very compact. Overall it's a good starting point and a lot better then nothing.

Another "Survival Kit in a Can" product. This has a nice whistle, a good box of quality matches, and a decent flint. The tinder here is a tea candle. That's OK if you're not in a hot climate, but in hot areas it's likely to melt all over the inside of your kit. Either replace it with some other tinder (see my reviews) or seal it in a tiny plastic bag. But other than that, the firestarting and signaling part of this kit is way better than most of the others. You supposedly use the can itself as a signal mirror.

A small but OK compass, and a nice little fishing kit are also included, again, the best of any of these "can" kits. There's a cheap little knife- you need better. I'd toss this and replace it with a couple of well wrapped single edge razor blades- assuming you carry a decent knife anyway.

No medical gear to speak of, so you'll need a small 1st aid kit to supplement this. But most other can kits are inadequate in this dept also.

No food supplements. True, you can't pack any decent calories in one of these cans. But, since a real good idea when 1st lost is to STOP! and make a cuppa, perhaps a couple of tea nags and a sugar packet could be added, and there's room for that, which is nice.

You also have a set of safety pins (many uses) and one of those hotel sewing kits. Could be worse.

The kit is compact, and fits in a pocket well. It is mostly waterproof and sealed with some tape which you can reuse.

So, if you supplement this with a good knife, a survival blanket or bivvie, a small 1st aid kit and some extra tinder, it's not a bad thing for situations where you aren't going to be too deep in the outback. But all by itself.....
