4.0 out of 5 stars The bomb!
I first saw Josh Wink at an underground party my roommate threw in Columbus. He tore the place down even though he started playing at 8am. I've been waiting to see him again live. Yeeeehaaa! He's coming to Phoenix next month. This album is absolutely phenomenal. It's what's right about techno. He let's you every aspect of the dance-relax spectrum is on this...

2.0 out of 5 stars too soft
Too much of a disco vibe. Doesn't deliver on the promise of "Higher State of Consciousness."

4.0 out of 5 stars Delectable Dark house favoring form over function, April 23, 2003
This review is from: Profound Sounds 1 (Audio CD)
In the liner notes of his album, Josh Wink explains the importance of mix tapes in his life, as an educational tool and learning experience of new forms of music. As his audience, he now tries to make mix tapes to achieve, "musical diversity...and to hear what's going on in the DJ's head." Apparently, Wink has been thinking about dark, often minimal, house music, and a flawless mix, even if it costs that diversity he so values.
Have no doubt that this is a professional production; the mixing is tight and unnoticeable, and most songs have been reworked to fit the aesthetic he strives for. The sound, while dark, minimal and mostly devoid of vocals, is still lively and engaging, a crafty paradox that makes this disc so successful. Meaning, for every percolating track like, "What's the time, Mr. Templar," you get the flitting chimes of "Vol. 1" by Care Company. When the album hits a bit of a drone in the middle (track 7's "Pop Culture") it quickly follows with the fly-girl attitude fun of "K-mart Shopping."

Yet striving for sound purity and technical quality does come with a trade-off; by choosing form, the function of music is compromised. It's dance music that's more engaging than exciting.

All that said, it's still a remarkable piece that holds to its vision and forges a new sound; it just prefers to be dance art rather than dance music.

When this cd came out I was a pizza delivery driver for Dominos. I used to take this with me and play it wherever I went. There is something mysteriously addictive about this mix. Highly recommended for pizza delivery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless masterpiece of dance music, March 29, 2003
This review is from: Profound Sounds 1 (Audio CD)
This mix by Josh Wink is awe inspiring. It spans through different genres of electronic music ranging from ambient to serious headbanging techno (no trance) all mixed seamlessly .

The feel of the cd is uplifting and refreshing. It's guarenteed to make you dance with your eyes closed or works ok in a car or office setting. I wouldn't recommend it though especially since the latter half of the mix is pounding and relentless and makes you want to pump up the volume and ingest some "party favors".

Just in case you newbies have never heard of Josh Wink, he is a respectable dj that can hang with the best of them, so fans of Louie DeVito steer clear from this one.

Don't deprive your ears of sweet sounds and buy the CD now!...

5.0 out of 5 stars Profound Sounds Vol.1 Josh Wink, March 13, 2000

What makes Josh Wink a true artist is that he can maximize delight for every type of trance/dance/house he gets involved in. While the "Higher State of Consciousness" album is upbeat and dance-oriented, Profound Sounds is much more mellow and minimalist. As with "United DJs of America Vol.1", it takes several listenings before its beauty hits you. But when it does, oh boy... The album's slow progession from total relax to funky disco/house is a great way to get in the mood for a night of clubbing, loving, or just sleeping. Sit back, relax, and let this album, too, take you to a higher state of consciousness!

I think that this album is excellent. It has that catchy beat while keeping you moving. His mix of "When The Funk Hits the Fan" is smooth, and even though this is one of my favorite songs ever, Wink reminds me of why it is. I recommend this to everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars De debil!, July 7, 2010

This mix is a soundtrack for a late night road trip...the anticipation, excitement, the friendship...the eventual drug use, the dancing, more drug use, new friends, making out, more drugs, more dancing. More drugs, then sleep.

4.0 out of 5 stars A build up, March 1, 2004
This review is from: Profound Sounds 1 (Audio CD)
This mix is one that builds slowly to climaxes rather than smacking you in the face right away. It may take some patience but I think after a short listen you'll come to appreciate it in its subtleties and understand that dance music can be complex and still fun.
