5.0 out of 5 stars Good (safe?) alternative to Advantage, Frontline and even natural treatments
I care a lot about my two cats and wanted to get them something that wouldn't harm them. I've read a lot of bad stuff about Frontline and Advantage. Most of the other competitors use something that is basically the same as what those two use. Basically Frontline and Advantage contain a neurotoxin that can be extremely harmful to your pets and humans. Not cool...

1.0 out of 5 stars Program Green didn't work at all for us.
We have used frontline for cat and the capstar tablets which worked great. This product didn't seem to do anything at all. Next time frontline liquid.

Not cool.

I looked up some more natural methods. Always remember - *Natural does not mean non-toxic*. Just because something is man-made doesn't make it toxic and just because something occurs in nature doesn't make it safe. I read some things about using garlic to help dogs avoid fleas - apparently at least somewhat ok for dogs, but can be very toxic for cats. Found some essential oil treatments... also looked like it could be toxic.

So I looked up this stuff. Program is completely different from Advantage and Frontline. The active ingredient in it is Lufenuron. I did as much research on it as I could and basically found that it is chemically inert for mammals. The chemical stays in the pet's fat and doesn't affect them at all supposedly. One study I read basically said "we gave them extremely high dosages of it and found that there is no lethal or harmful dosage". Basically they pumped some animals full of as much lufenuron as they could and nothing happened. Sounds good to me!

Lufenuron DID however get included in a biocide ban in Europe because of its supposed toxicity to zooplankton - unsurprising since lufenuron inhibits chitin production. Chitin is what the exoskeletons of fleas are made out of (this is how it kills flea reproduction on your pet) as well as the exoskeletons of zooplankton.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE PROGRAM! Great for sensitive cats!, September 13, 2009
This review is from: Program Green for cats 11-20 lbs 6 month supply (Misc.)
My cat is allergic to Frontline and Advantage, which are topical pesticides that get ingested when the cat grooms itself. He would get a lump on his neck wherever I would apply it, so I stopped using topical insecticide for flea control.

I really like Program. It controls fleas for a month, and I never have a problem with my cat getting sick. I put the medication into a little bowl with tuna juice from a can, mix it up, and he drinks it right away.

Even if your cat has a flea infestation, just give them a flea bath and use Program. It's so much safer for the cat. I'll never use anything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Program for flea control is the best!, August 11, 2009
This review is from: Program Green for cats 11-20 lbs 6 month supply (Misc.)
I have a small "herd" of cats. They are therapists, pest control experts, (flies and spiders are their specialty) comic relief, good listeners when they are not "talking", but most of all, friends. I know they are good for me and I hope that I am good for them. One way to support their health and happiness is to use Program for flea control. I believe it is the best for this. Since I have multiple cats they take naps together etc. and they do groom and help each other with "bath time". For this reason alone topical treatments are not acceptable, not to mention that I don't want to be exposed to those chemicals either! Speaking from experience, when used consistently over the flea season, Program is the most effective product out there. I buy the Program Green oral suspension because I am able to share one packet between lighter weight cats (knead well first before cutting the package open, this mixes it) not something you can do with the tablets. The larger cats get a packet to themselves but you definitely save money buying the Program for heavier cats and dividing packets between the lighter weight cats. Also my cats can be fussy and the oral suspension is so easy to mix in canned food or canned tuna (whatever your cat simply cant resist). I have used Program since it came on the market years ago and I am happy to say its amazing!! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY good, Highly recommended, August 30, 2010
This review is from: Program Green for cats 11-20 lbs 6 month supply (Misc.)
Let me start by saying that I am a naturalist and prefer to use no chemicals for treating my cat's problems. A few years ago I took in a stray for 1 night. This 1 night was long enough for a few of it's fleas to escape into my home and within a couple of weeks I had an infestation, and it took me just about that long to realize (after I had been bitten several hundred times) I immediately opted for Frontline to treat both my cats, well I kept re-applying it after about three weeks (sometimes 2) because my cats would clean each other off and so the medication really wasn't staying long enough and I feared for their health knowing they were licking this off. I saw a slight reduction of fleas but they would always come back. The winter time was our only actual break from the fleas, shortly after realizing that my cats would clean off the frontline OR not have any much improvement I looked for other solutions and discovered CAPSTAR, a quick knockdown flea killer that worked for 24 hrs to kill all adult fleas that bite my pet in that 24 hr period, it worked wonderfully. However a half year after the infestation I had the entire home deep steam pressure cleaned *by ZeroRez very good company* while simultaneously washing and de-flea-ing my cats (using capstar and a natural flea shampoo). This procedure significantly reduced the fleas to a point where I felt the problem was taken care of and I continued the frontline treatment....well two months later it was as if nothing had even been done about the problem, it was at that point that I suspected the Frontline was not really working too well. After reading many reviews regarding the inefficiency of Frontline on cats in particular I did more research and discovered Program (nearly two and a half years after infestation) well I learned that there was a 6 month injectable treatment for cats (and if you know my cats habits then you would know that they would run away every time they saw me grab the Frontline ampule haha, which would make it sooo annoying to apply on them) well this injectable option was a very good solution for me, and after reading that Program had been around for much longer than Frontline was was much more natural it was a no brainer for me and I decided to go for it. I used Program in conjunction with Capstar (using Capstar on days when I noticed several adult fleas on my cat) and within 2 weeks I rarely saw 1 flea... and now 3 months later I saw 1 flea in 3 weeks, I haven't been bitten by any fleas in those 3 months which is a HUGE relief especially since we are just getting over the Summer weather (which is the weather fleas LOVE to thrive in) and we had a practically flea free season! My cats have never been happier and I believe this has saved me hundreds in otherwise useless Frontline treatments. I know this particular review area is for Program supply for cats (not injectable) but I believe all of Novartis' products work flawlessly AND are a much safer alternative than the chemicals used in the most widely known brands (Frontline and Advantage) So i recommend that IF you wish to see the full effectiveness of Program, you should use it alongside with Capstar to kill off all adult fleas, But if you use it alone, you will see some adult fleas, be smart and do your research :) I will continue to use this combination products and recommend it to all my friends and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars An effective and easy-to-use flea control system, September 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Program Green for cats 11-20 lbs 6 month supply (Misc.)
I waited for nearly 3 months to write this review, because Program does take some time to work. The product itself tells you that, since the flea life cycle is approximately 3 weeks, it takes time to see results.

After nearly 3 months (3 to 4 full flea life cycles, I estimate) my cat has experienced a significant reduction in the number of fleas. Before I started Program, I was giving my cat flea baths with Sargeant's shampoo, plus a flea collar, and we were still pulling off several fleas per day. The shampoo and the flea collar just weren't doing much to kill the fleas.

Now, I haven't had to bathe my cat with flea shampoo in 3 weeks. I threw the flea collar away last month. In the past 7 days, I only found 2 fleas on my cat, and I've been searching for them every day. Plus, the fleas I did find were obviously in a greatly weakened condition. When I pulled the fleas off, they literally disintegrated.

My cat hardly ever scratches any more, the bite marks have all disappeared, and he's a much happier camper these days.

Plus, this stuff is so easy to administer. I feed my cat solid cat food almost exclusively, so canned cat food is a rare treat. I just mix up Program with a couple of tablespoons of canned cat food, and he gobbles it right down. So much better than topical treatments and pills, both of which are a pain to deal with.

This is definitely a 5 star product. Highly recommended.

Note: For the first two months, you will need a supplemental flea control procedure to give Program time to work. Be sure to continue to wash your cat with flea shampoo, adminster flea powder, or drops, etc. during the first two months.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works...., July 24, 2008
This review is from: Program Green for cats 11-20 lbs 6 month supply (Misc.)
With other products, they always tell you that you have to use flea spray in the home and clean good yadda yadda.... With program... All you do is give it to the animal. The fleas are gone in 30 days. Period. No muss no fuss no bother. This time was for two indoor cats I have that frontline failed to get rid of the fleas. I've used it before with my dog. I lived in a town that was infested with fleas. Before I got the dog, I was covered with flea bites. Didn't matter how much I sprayed or cleaned. When I got the dog, I used program. The fleas were eliminated in 30 days. Period. Then a few months later I'd get more. Bear in mind this town was infested with fleas. Just one months treatment would get rid of them. Program is far better than any product out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only oral flea treatment to fight fleas on cats, May 31, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Program Green for cats 11-20 lbs 6 month supply (Misc.)
Our cat was infested with fleas. We tried various Topical Flea Treatment brands; however our cat licks these chemicals. The `Program Green for cats' is the only one on the market we were able to find to keep our cat free of fleas. This cream must have a good flavor, because our cat doesn't avoid it as `Capstar Blue' tablets, which kills fleas instantly, but doesn't protect the cat for longer than the instant killing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liquid not tablets, July 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Program Green for cats 11-20 lbs 6 month supply (Misc.)
I received liquid not tablets. Currently, the listing states the product is in tablet form, but the picture says "oral suspension". I was surprised to get a liquid, but I think it was easier to give to my cats that way. Just make sure you feed it to them rather than dumping it on their backs. It looks somewhat like the frontline packaging. Amazon needs to correct this listing to avoid confusion.
