5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of gems, September 20, 2007

Leontyne Price made her name in full-throated operatic roles, but here in a more intimate setting she is no less magnificent. This was her first recording, made in 1959, so you're hearing her with a youthful bloom and sheen in her voice that is remarkable. High sound quality here in the transfer to disc helps bring this out.

The whole album is worth her "Allerseelen." Her other three Strauss songs are probably the strongest points of the album, followed by Faure's "Au cimetiere" and the four Poulenc choices, all very brief. Hugo Wolf, for whom I don't really care, rounds out the program with three songs and the heavy "Lebe wohl."

Price brings all these off with her usual ease but certain passion. Worthwhile.

I first heard this on lp (yes, that long ago) and was bowled over. This was in the early 60's. Ms. Price is wonderful, but perhaps more amazing to me was the wide range of songs that I had never heard. I dearly love Poulenc, and Morgentau is an absolute gem. I still play it (now on CD). I generally like very high sopranos, but she has such wonderful taste that it doesn't matter.
Oh, I didn't get the record at Amazon, cause there wasn't any in the early 60's, but I've bought a cd or two from them of the same record recently.
