Book Description

0750659866 978-0750659864 June 13, 2003 3
This is the introduction to PLCs for which baffled students, technicians and managers have been waiting. In this straightforward, easy-to-read guide, Bill Bolton has kept the maths to a minimum, avoided detailed programming instructions and presented the subject in a way that is not device specific - increasing its applicability to courses in electronics and control systems.

Having read this book, you should be able to:
* Identify the main design characteristics and internal architecture of PLCs.
* Describe and identify the characteristics of commonly used input and output devices.
* Explain the processing of inputs and outputs of PLCs.
* Describe communication links involved with control systems.
* Develop ladder programs for the logic functions AND, OR, NOR, NAND, NOT and XOR.
* Demonstrate use of internal relays, timers, counters, shift registers, sequencers and data handling.
* Identify fail/safe methods.
* Identify methods used for fault diagnosis, testing and debugging programs.

The third edition has been expanded to contain new material on fail / safe operating conditions, Sequential Function Charts, floating point numbers and dummy rungs, with discussion of commercial PLCs. There is also extended coverage on the programming of PLCs for fault diagnosis, as well as distributed systems and program documentation. Each chapter is followed with a Problems section, for students to put the theory they have learnt into practice. Appendices contain further problems, and answers to all questions from each chapter are included at the back of the book.

* New edition expanded to cover safety - a key aspect of PLC use
* Further problems included at the end of each chapter, with a complete set of answers given at the back of the book
* Presentation is not device-specific, maximising applicability to a range of courses in electronics and control systems

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book with many mistakes, September 3, 2004
This review is from: Programmable Logic Controllers, Third Edition (Audio Cassette)
This is a great book for beginning PLC programmers, but there are numerouse errors throughout the book which cause confusion when trying to understand the use of Internal Relays, Timers and Counters. Use caution and refer back to the text when completing the tests at the end of each section and when reading about how some ladder logic is functioning, I noticed miss-labled Inputs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good for getting your feet wet with plc's, December 1, 1998
By A Customer
This is a very good introduction for those who have no personal experience with plc's. It does not focus on one brand, but introduces the reader to various manufacturers and the way each functions in comparison to each other. It is great for understanding the capabilities of PLC's. Further information is needed to learn to program and design with plc's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellant introduction to programmable logic controllers!, July 6, 1998
By A Customer
This book is an excellant text for anyone just starting out or just wanting to brush up on programmable logic controllers. The content and layout of the information was very good. It made it easy to start with the basics and work up to the more complex operations. I especially liked that the book did not focus on one particular brand name of controller, but mentioned each brand and included many program examples of all the major brands.

The only drawback I found was that there seemed to be a lot of evident errors and misprints witht the text. Some are obvious such as incorrect numbering, while others I caught by asking questions of experienced individuals. I liked the fact that each chapter included a set of chapter review questions, but once again there seemed to be many misprints and incorrect answers. I only wish that the publisher would have checked closer for the misprints.
