Excellent fast-paced jump into C++,
This review is from: C++ Programming In Easy Steps (Paperback)
I just bought this book yesterday. I'm finished reading it now. Just about the only time I was able to force myself to put it down was when I was typing in the examples and modifying the code and creating new programs.
I can see how this book would potentially be confusing for someone who is COMPLETELY new to programming and the concept of programming, but if you have any programming experience at all, I encourage you to try this book if you want to become familiar with the basics of C++ very quickly. It's an excellent book, is fairly fast-paced... skips the "dry" material and gets you actually USING C++ very quickly. I picked up my copy from Borders locally for $15 + tax... for that amazing price, you can't go wrong with this book. I would have easily paid double.

I just got this book today. The book has colorfiul illustrations, easy to follow. Shows you how to use a complier, shows you steps in understanding code language. Explains the basic's very detailed to comprehend. The book isn't a thick arsed book, where your like my gosh..I have to read this all to get it?? Chapters aren't long, at all...gets to the darn point of things. Did I say this book is colorful, not in the worst way..enough to aplease your interest into learning about C++ programing...it beats the boring black in white books on C++. It says it best on the cover: "EASY TO FOLLOW" "PLAIN ENGLISH" "FULLY ILLUSTRATED"....HEY, I don't disagree!!!!
A must have for anyone who needs help, in learning C++ or for anyone who needs to revisit the subject...and besides it's inexpensive to buy. ....Enjoy. :)

Not so easy steps for me,
By Boogers McGee "Boogers" (South East, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: C++ Programming In Easy Steps (Paperback)
Well, this book does have some good information and I have learned a fair amount. My problem was that in the first few pages it says "This book makes no assumption that the reader has previous knowledge of any programming language..." yet it jumped right in to using functions and terms that I had to research further to understand fully. I had very little knowledge of programming when I received this book so this made it a little tougher for me to use. But, there is good information here and when used along side Google search and your compiler's help menus you can get through it and learn the basics!
Overall, this book is in "not so easy steps" for those who are complete noobs. Do a little online research as you thumb through the chapters and you will be just fine!

An effective teaching method that's easy to follow.,
This review is from: C++ Programming In Easy Steps (Paperback)
This book is fantastic.
"C++ Programming in Easy Steps" should be the first book that beginning C++ programmers should read. Mike McGrath, the author, does a wonderful job in teaching the concepts. Each chapter is color coordinated and contains 8 lessons over a general topic; like Object-Oriented Programming, pointing to data, and even making a GUI application with Visual Studios. The lessons are designed to make you think. So instead of giving the reader the full source code, he divides it up into sections, describes what it does, then tells you where to type it. Although, there are a few bugs in 3 or 4 lessons, you can get the corrections if you download the source files from the "Resource Center" at [...]. Overall, this book is a must have for C++ programmers learning the basics. Note: If you have any problems getting hello world to work, then download code::blocks for an IDE. |
