Book Description

1599945401 978-1599945408 November 12, 2007
In this pragmatic, example-driven book, author Neil Constable demonstrates how you can use SAS code to enhance the capabilities of SAS Enterprise Guide. Designed to help you gain extra value from the products you already have, this book contains tips and techniques that show you a variety of features that cannot be accessed directly through the task interfaces. In all cases, techniques are shown with examples that you can try and test, plus additional exercises are included to give you more practice. The end result is more efficient and resilient use of SAS Enterprise Guide in a wider variety of business areas.

Included is a discussion of the following subject areas:

  • the Output Delivery System
  • advanced formatting
  • macro variables and macros
  • advanced reporting using PROC REPORT
  • highlighting in reports
  • hyperlinking between reports and graphs
  • data manipulation using SQL
  • data manipulation using the DATA step
  • extended graphics

By adding small amounts of code in key areas, SAS Enterprise Guide users can get more out of the product than the tasks reveal. Users should be familiar with the SAS Enterprise Guide user interface and tasks. No programming experience is necessary.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"SAS Enterprise Guide is the de facto tool for business analysts who wish to rapidly exploit information from their data with SAS. Neil's book is an essential accompaniment for business users wishing to take SAS Enterprise Guide beyond the point-and-click. The capabilities of the SAS language are vast, yet this book masterfully takes the reader on a journey from editing SAS Enterprise Guide generated code, through numerous practical examples, into the powerful world of reusability with macros. Along the way Neil concisely explains not just t he how, but the why--putting into context what might otherwise seem like complex components of SAS programming." --David Shannon, Technical Director, Amadeus Software

"As more and more people are introduced to SAS through SAS Enterprise Guide, rather than the traditional programming route, there is a growing need to help these users fully understand and employ the full power of the SAS programming language. SAS Programming for Enterprise Guide Users fills this gap admirably. This book helps SAS Enterprise Guide users to understand the code behind task objects and how to expand them beyond the options that SAS Enterprise Guide provides." --Richard F. Pless, Director, Data Operations,ICON Clinical Research

"The shotgun blast of coding knowledge provided may be intimidating to people who are unused to raw code, but with the author's clear understanding of SAS code and its use in SAS Enterprise Guide, there is no need for fear. His explanations show the steps to be followed, and he points out the cause and effect of changing default SAS Enterprise Guide behavior. He also provides great advice on how to avoid the gotchas." --Britta K. August, Business Intelligence Developer, CareSource Management Group ,

5.0 out of 5 stars When you get sick of clicking get this, December 21, 2008

This review is from: SAS Programming for Enterprise Guide Users (SAS Press) (Perfect Paperback)
This book is an excellent addition to your library if you are using Enterprise Guide and want to automate tasks or if you hit the limit on what you can do with the point and click system with EG. The writing is easy to understand and not too dense (but very informative). It covers issues like tweaking your projects so that they will run on multiple variables chosen from a pick-list (think macro variables made super easy if you know SAS code), exploring the code that EG writes for you and adding functionality that you can not get using the point and click system. The discussion of the SQL code written by the query tool is very well done and extremely useful if you want to understand then expand on the queries and filters that EG writes.

If you are a SAS programmer and get asked to help somebody learn EG this book will be very helpful because it makes it easy to track down the SAS code procedures within the EG graphical user interface.

I would highly recommend this for people who have read The Little SAS Book for Enterprise Guide 4.1 The Little SAS Book for Enterprise Guide and who want to go beyond the basics in that book.

This is a good book. It is clear with good examples and easy to use. If you have Enterprise Guide version 3.0 you should read this first.
