Excellent for a Complete Introduction to Java.
Java! gives a complete view about Java including: Java
environment, Java programming language, applet, awt,
classes, interfaces with C programs and Java Virtual
Machine, that you usually don't find all together in a book.
It introduces to Java in a very easy and didactic way,
that we couldn't find in a reference book, thanks to Tim

Good introduction to Java but is slightly out dated.
This is a good book to begin with. It, with Sun's online information will get you well on your way started. Unfortunatly, there does not seem to be a newer edition availible so the CD ROM examples do not work. The writing is very good for a computer book and the is plenty of good background information all Java programmers need to know. Also, it tells you how to get...

Poor quality book, February 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming With Java! (Paperback)
This introductory book does not worth its price at all. A CD-ROM examples does not work, long file names not supported. Many bugs on the printed pages. As an intoductory book with so many bugs does not make beginner's life easier. Today it is outdated so hopefully not on stock.

Poor organization - overall not worth the money, July 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming With Java! (Paperback)
This book presents topics in an unorganized manner. The information presented is not very detailed either. The lack of details makes it not appropriate for beginners and the poor orgainization makes it useless for experienced developers. Highly recommend avoiding this book.

The online document contains a lot more information, December 20, 1995
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming With Java! (Paperback)
Java! gives you a hint of what programming Java is like.
If you want a book which can guide you to finish your
first Java project (especially for the Java competition),
you can leave this book alone. In some of the chapters, like
the AWT Class Library, the example it presents is far too
complicate and the explanation is limited.
The online documentation provided by Sun, though not very
explanatory at many places, does provide a lot more valuable
information.

It introduces to Java in a very easy and didactic way,
that we couldn't find in a reference book, thanks to Tim
Ritchey's wide knowledge from artificial intelligence to
archaeology. So it's great as your first book about Java.
And after you may select another book to go more deeply on
some specific topic, as "The Java Programming Language (The
Java Series)" of Ken Arnold, James Gosling - that you can
find in the Amazon's catalog - for multithreading (one of
the greatest features of Java). The CD-ROM that comes with
Java! helps you to don't waste your precious time on typing
and downloading softwares for Win NT, Win 95 and Solaris.
I appreciated and recommend it!
