Programming Languages: Principles and Paradigms by Allen Tucker and Robert Noonan provides balanced coverage of both the principles of language design and the different programming paradigms.

The principles of language design are covered using a formal model and a hands-on laboratory suite that uses a Java interpreter to implement the formal model. The text presents and contrasts six major programming paradigms: imperitave, object-oriented, functional, logic, concurrent, and event-driven programming. Through the use of one language for each paradigm, students gain a deep understanding of the paradigm without being distracted by a profusion of languages.

More About the Author

Allen B. Tucker is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor Emeritus at Bowdoin College. He has held similar faculty positions at Georgetown and Colgate Universities. He earned a BA in mathematics from Wesleyan University and an MS and PhD in Computer Science from Northwestern University. He is an ACM Fellow and Distinguished Lecturer.

Professor Tucker has publications in the areas of programming languages, software development, natural language processing, and curriculum development. He has been a Fulbright lecturer at the Ternopil Academy in Ukraine, and a visiting lecturer at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, Esigelec in France and Boston University in Germany. He is currently an active open source software developer and an advisory board member for the Humanitarian FOSS Project.

I do a lot of programming of microprocessors and work a lot with Linux writing scripts. I have also done some web programming. My education in computer science is limited. I bought this book so I could learn more about programming languages, how compilers work, etc.. On a college website, I saw it being used as a textbook. The 1st 5 chapters are pretty good, but after there are chapters like "Object Oriented Programming", "Event Programming" which I already know. I'm keeping it. It may help fill in some gaps in those areas. However, I don't consider this a strong book on programming languages.
