An Access 2000 programming page-turner.,
By
This review is from: Programming Microsoft Access 2000 (Microsoft Programming Series) (Paperback)
I bought three Access 2000 programming books so I could spend the next few months learning ADO and the new stuff in the 2000 version. Only Dobson's went directly to the point. After going through 1/5th of the book I have done about 30 little procedures, most of them using ADO techniques when appropriate. Imagine the rest...Lot's and lot's of code samples to learn from and explore, I love it! After a brief introduction to VBA, you'll quickly (unlike other books in the same category) explore the ADO new model with practical samples using table, SQL, forms, reports and much more. Highly recommended. Thanks Mr. Dobson.

This book is a must for your library.,

Whether you are a beginning Access programmer, or a seasoned veteran in Access and Visual Basic, this book is a must for your library. Amazingly this book offers something for everyone. Although not designed for the casual end user, anyone interested in developing more sophisticated applications in Access will find this book to be a good guide. For the beginner it presents an orderly explanation of the basic principles of VBA programming with great clarity. For the intermediate to advanced programmer it also provides depth as well as an explanation of the new features in Access 2000. It is always a challenging task to keep up with all the new technology. For everyone it offers good examples of how to accomplish the task at hand. Without a doubt this is the best book currently available for Access 2000 programming.

A very good book, but not for beginners!,

The book is a good guide for people who have some experience with Access, and does an especially good job in introducing the new features in Access 2000, such as the use of ADO. However, do not buy this book expecting to learn the basics of Access from it. It is filled with acronyms and terms which will lose you unless you previously know what they mean, although the author does a good job giving a brief explanation of each one. Otherwise it is a great book and a good guide to VBA for people who have already played around with Access.

While Programming Microsoft Access 2000 is a title promising much to the serious developer, the book contains relatively little code and much survey. There is far too much of "You can do X,' and not enough 'Here's how to do X.'It is especially good in its coverage in general terms of features new to the "2000" edition of Access, but a little spotty. For example, an important new feature in Access 2000 is the slimmed-down SQL Server 7, under the name "MSDE." The author discusses SQL Server 7's Stored Procedures feature in detail. Still, there is no mention of the Triggers that, for example, enable automatically numbered fields. On the other hand, there are good code examples of how to use the new ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) feature. I toyed with returning the book, but decided to keep it as a good overview and supplement it with a more detailed work intended for the serious developer.

I'm not as positive as the other folks. The book spends a good amount of time teaching non-programming topics (surprising, given it's title). And I learned much more, both in programming and non-programming topics, in the "running microsoft access 2000" book. "Programming access 2000" really flies over a lot of programming topics. For example, it spends 27 pages on "forms", which of course includes data entry. "Running Microsoft Access" has 62 pages on using VB in forms, but also a chapter on using macros for data entry, and another chapter partly dedicated to the topic, and a whole chapter dedicated to VB fundamentals. In other words, probably 3 times as much. In fairness, Programming Access covers many more topics, like working with other MSFT applications, but I thought the book would focus on the fundamentals of creating a great Access Application, not quick run throughs of many topics.

An Excellent Introduction,

I am an intermediate scientific programmer with no database experience and needed to use Access programmatically. I tried other books but settled on this one when I actually started coding. I needed a broad scope like Dobson's; he includes topics other introductions omit - such as connecting to Excel spreadsheets. I also wanted ADO instructions. I find Dobson's clear, succint style appealing; his examples fit the writing and can be adapted to one's own needs. I bought two.

Programmin Microsoft Access 2000,

I am what may be described as a `power user' and have developed a couple of Access applications for my consultancy in the past that were heavily dependent upon macros. Having a requirement for a new extensive application I was keen to adopt a more procedure-orientated approach to its design. I bought this book as a guide and have found the chapters dealing with the introduction to VBA and Access procedures particularly logically in approach and easy to follow. In my experience this is an excellent book for those making the migration from power user to new developer.

I have been teaching Access programming for 4 years. Since I use this book, I have learned a lot, and all of my students love this book. This books has many very valuable examples, also it covers ADO topics in detail. This book impresses me the most is that it covers progmming topics in depth. If you want to learn progmming in Access, this is the right book for you.

There may be some good Access/VBA books out there. This is notone of them. The section on Office integration is almostworthless. This is not for the beginner and experienced developerswill get little from it. To be fair, there are a few cute techniquesyou can pick up from this book, and it might be worth having around ifyou could pick it up off a bargain table for less than ....
