5.0 out of 5 stars This is a terrific book! A must have for VB newbies.
I found lots of basic programming info in this book that either wasn't available in other books or wasn't easy to find. I'm a novice programmer and have learned so much doing the projects in this book. The tutorials are based on what you might be asked to do in the real world, are fairly comprehensive, and offer so much more than the little "hello world" type...

ok, this book teaches just super basic aspect of vb programing. I guess that is recommended for persons who neither have made an application nor have use a windows application in their lives!!

It explains how to use the VB interface to make an application. I mean, step-by-step how to add a controler and when you have to click "ok", "next",...

Highly recommended for newbies to programming and especially VB programming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best VB beginner's textbook ever written!, December 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming With Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 for Windows (Paperback)
Diane Zak is an absolute master at teaching, and it really shows in this wonderful introductory textbook for Visual BASIC 5.0. She uses case studies that lead the reader through the construction of applications and the use of a good amount of VB statements, functions, etc. When I started reading, I was brand new to programming. When I finished the text, I really had a sense of having learned an incredible amount about VB, and now I'm writing real applications we use everyday in our office.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best for Beginners, November 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming With Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 for Windows (Paperback)
I used this in my High School class, and I didn't even need the instructor. Diane's methods are for the very beginner, and the instructions about when to click, got a bit annoying after a while, but it is the best book for a beginner that I have seen in a while. The user learns when to look ahead and see when she is telling you to put in wrong code to demostrate a point, another annoying feature, but easily avoidable. I short, this is one of the best books on VB for the beginner that I have seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars I did better with this book than the teacher teaching it., June 25, 1999

I took Visual Basic at our local community college and thankfully had this book to help me understand the basics of VB. The teacher, which was actually a very nice person, couldn't seem to get the students to understand the complexity of VB. If it wasn't for this book, I would have given up!

We used this book in my Intro to VB 5.0 class and everyone enjoyed it. The book starts off slow and walks you through some advanced programming topics, holding your hand every step of the way. And no fluff.

The code used in this book was *Wonderful*! Very easy to understand and the real world examples made it fun to learn.

I went from being an absolute beginner to building useful Active X controls, games, and a small database with Crystal Reports in a week!

This book not only shows you how to create great software, but also how to make your programs look good. I Highly recommend it!

My only regret is that the book doesn't go into advanced topics such as web publishing with VBscript, or building databases using DAO or SQL, which is a suprise since those skills are necessary in the workplace.

However, I am looking forward to Visual Basic 6.0 and Programming in C++ by the same author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beginners Book, December 18, 1999
This review is from: Programming With Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 for Windows (Paperback)
This book is used at college for helping to teach VB 5.0 in college. It is very good for newbies who don't know anything about visual tools or object oriente/event driven programming. discusses this topic in a good level of detail. It introduces the Visual Basic interface. It also teaches how to design applications, what variables and constants are, programming and looping techniques (If-Then-Else If)(do-while-loop). It also discusses techniques about accessing files (sequential and random access), error traping, and arrays. however, towards the end it introduces very poorly the power of Visual Basic when linking it to DDE, OLE and Databases. It should've stayed away from that topic. The book comes with the Visual Basic 5.0 Control Creation Edition CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Introductory Text, March 15, 1999
This review is from: Programming With Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 for Windows (Paperback)
If you can't learn Visual BASIC using this book, you should hang it up. The authors approach for each chapter is to give a general review of each topic. This is followed by a thorough explanation of the concepts and the VB tools you need to make the concepts happen. The reader then progresses through a series of short programs that make use of the tools and allow the reader to think of the solutions before they are explained. The exercises (especially the discovery ones) are very helpful. There are plenty of exercises so you can really test your knowledge.

I wanted to learn vb and it was my first programming language and I had it recommended to me. Within a week I was making rather useful VB applications that I was proud of. This should be your first book of VB programming.

It's very simple. Diane Zak, if you have not written a sequel to this, you MUST! What a wonderful teaching method. What a most delightful teacher. I have tried most of the rest, but this is most certainly the BEST. Thank YOU.
