Great book, but dated, August 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh/Book and Cd-Rom (Paperback)
For those frustrated users (& reviewers) who have some problems using this book, note that it was written in 1995! This is ancient history for programming. The amazing thing is how much Trudeau writes is still useful. As others have noted, & despite what Trudeau says, you should at least have an aquaintance with C before you start. Assuming that (& noting the age of the book) this is still the best programming book available in any language, for any platform. We need to pry Trudeau away from Metrowerks, where he worked last time I looked, long enough to update his book for OSX.

Good book, with some help, June 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh/Book and Cd-Rom (Paperback)
I have read this book, and continue to use it most fo my mac programming adventures. It is more of a desk reference for me, but if you know C, have read through this, and then look at the Apple Inside Mas books for stuff the book dosent explain, you will be well off at mac programming

if you already know how-to, this is Ok....., May 12, 1998

I've been reading and working with this booK, and presents several problems when you are using MacOS 8, you can't compile many files, you have to use the 'complete' files and some 'start' projects do not open, I don't know why is this, and if is not enough there's not an e-mail address to reach Mr. Trudeau, sometimes I feel deeply fustrated working with this book. But if you have experience programming on C/C++, this is an open door to the extraordinary world of Macintosh.

Not for the beginning programmer, June 25, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh/Book and Cd-Rom (Paperback)
This was a good book, but i would recommend getting it after reading Dave Mark's "Learn C on the Macintosh". Although it claims to be able to teach you the C language it is better as a reference, if you learn C and then read this book it works great. The huge index of toolbox calls is really helpfull

Best code examples I've found!, January 27, 2001
This review is from: Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh/Book and Cd-Rom (Paperback)
Why are there so few GOOD books on programming? Because good programmers are generally too busy writing good programs to write books. Thankfully, Jim took some time out for us! I have trouble staying awake with most tutorial-oriented books, and I feel they waste a lot of space... One of the beauties of this book is that the code is VERY WELL COMMENTED! Just open the final versions and read the comments: They're right in place (i.e. contextual) and don't force you to run back to the book. Once you've looked over the code (and perhaps started making your own changes), go to the book for details. I did have troubles with the init that came with CodeWarrior Lite, but it runs fine without it. I'm now using CodeWarrior 5.

Excellent approach to Mac Programming, July 19, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh/Book and Cd-Rom (Paperback)
Instead of giving scattered examples that demonstrate just a single part of the Mac Toolbox, it works on an integral, fully working application. This helps you to know how everthing works together. Readers interested in learning should know C, but only the basics, such its syntax rules and how functions work. Nobody needs to be an expert with a thorough, working knowledge of C, to learn from this book

Where is the Support after the product crashes your MAC?, January 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh/Book and Cd-Rom (Paperback)
I was really excited to find a book such as this. I really needed to brush up on my C Programming skills, but the the application extension froze my PowerMac during boot up. I never could find any technical support or updates to solve the problem. The book/CD is worthless if you don't support the product.
