5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Only BOA coverage though.
The presentation of the book is great. I did not find the general CORBA section all that useful, but the later sections provided some valuable insights.

My main criticism is that the book is getting slightly dated. There is no coverage of the POA. The current edition is totally BOA based. A couple of chapters by the authors on using Visibroker to handle transactions...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but you need JBuilder3
This book give a good explanation about the most famous ORB in the world, Visibroker. The short problem is that the writers don't explain how we have to integrate with a useful IDE. If you plain to buy this book, get Jbuilder first and enjoy it with Visibroker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Best CORBA Book so far ...., May 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming With Visibroker : A Developer's Guide to Visibroker for Java (Paperback)
I have 3 CORBA books and this one is definitely the best. It teaches you CORBA from a practical point of view through the use of VisiBroker. The guy with 1 star recommendation nit-picking about typos and Visibroker version totally missed the point. As far as OMG CORBA specification is concerned, VisiBroker version does not make a difference. For me, I did not really want to learn VisiBroker as a product. I wanted to learn CORBA through VisiBroker. If you want to learn about CORBA with Java from a beginner or intermediate level, this book is the best I have read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Help me port a Java/TCP app to Java/Visibroker, July 19, 2000
I had a Java/TCP app and quickly moved it to Java/Visibroker using this book. The book is very similar to The Official Visibroker for Java Handbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great CORBA book!, June 30, 1999
By A Customer
This book contains clear discussions and examples and is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn CORBA. All the examples are based in Java, but this book would be useful for any type of programmer wanting a more complete understanding of CORBA. This book is a perfect blend of high-level architecture discussion and concrete code examples without superfluous chapters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be bundled with Visibroker, February 4, 1999
Although I'm more interested in Visibroker for C++, I found this book very practical and helpful. The book is more helpful than the official Visibroker documentation and should be bundled with all versions of Visibroker.

CORBA is a standard, but there are features that only Visibroker provides (OSAgent for example). The book clearly described the reasons Visibroker made these enhancements and helped you decide if you want to take advantage of them.

Even though all printed source is in Java (or IDL of course), the main, larger example in the book has equivalent C++ source code on the enclosed CD-ROM.

5.0 out of 5 stars *The* book for the serious VisiBroker programmer, September 16, 1998
I am very disappointed with most CORBA books, e.g. the Martian books fill me with dismay and make me wonder whether CORBA will ever make it. But this is a proper book, this is a book that tells you facts. I have printed out the on-line manuals for VisiBroker, and read them, and this book taught me heaps more stuff.

I absolutely recommend this book for anyone who has to write a VisiBroker program which is more than just a bank example. We have a team of developers, and the book is in such demand that I have to get a second copy.

This book is not a tutorial, and it is not about general CORBA. If you buy VisiBroker, you should buy this book as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, February 29, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Explains concepts better then other books I've found including Orfali. Explains Visibroker tool set which Visibroker does not document well i.e. OSAgent and OAD. Also does a good job inre explaining CosNaming and helping you think in IDL.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY book you need for programming Visibroker using Java, February 17, 1999
I've purchased three or four other books on CORBA and the only one that's of any use to me is this book. I wish I could return the others (including the Orfali book).

Bottom line is if your programming Visibroker in Java BUY this book. Also refer to the Visibroker docs on-line at the Inprise website.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for blue collar workers., September 9, 1998
By A Customer
Programming with VisiBroker is precise and practical. A very decently organized book with examples and tips on how to design distributed systems. If you are a Java/C++ programmer looking to learn CORBA, you will relish this book. Beware; the Transaction Monitor Service is not covered. This is quite disappointing!
