BUYER BEWARE!!!,
This review is from: Programming with Visual Basic 6.0, Enhanced Edition (Paperback)
This is a course text book and does not come with the solution files to the exams found at the end of each lesson. After speaking with a rep from Thompson Learning - the book's publisher - I was advised that the solution files were part of the instructor package, and was not available to individuals. In other words, if you are not a certified instructor, or part of an instructor led course that features this book, you will not be able to measure your progress from the exams in the book.I found speaking to the reps of Thompson Learning to be a particularly frustrating experience as I was treated rudely by both reps I spoke to. They offered absolutely no help whatsoever. The book, in itself, is very well written and easy to follow. However, if you are not part of an instructor led course that features this book with access to the solution files, you may want to invest your money elsewhere. As for this buyer, Thompson Learning is a definite two thumbs down.

This is an excellent book for beginners and a great refresher for professionals needing to brush up. However, if you are a student using this book and you have to buy it used - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CD that should come with this book. You can download the assignments from the website BUT YOU NEED THE CD FOR VB 6.0 > I bought this book used and it did not come with CD so I used VB 5.0 and there are some slight differences and the assignments on tutorial 4-9 cannot open some of the projects using VB 5.0 > SO YOU MUST HAVE VB 6.0

Excellent Choice & Bargain,

This review is from: Programming with Visual Basic 6.0, Enhanced Edition (Paperback)
This is one of the best introductory and "bargain" choice for Visual Basic 6 programming. It is very easy to follow and designed for self-starters. I have used this book for my class at a few colleges, for introduction to programming course.

Awesome Text for Beginners,
By Jerome K. Haberer (Maryland USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Programming with Visual Basic 6.0, Enhanced Edition (Paperback)
This text is quite a piece to carry around - over 900 pages - but the structure is ideal for folks who are interested enough to teach themselves Visual Basic 6 without the benefit of an instructor looking over their shoulders. The book takes readers through a wide variety of practical exercises in interface planning, coding and debugging, without boring you to death with unnecessary commentary. It gets right to the meat of things; it stimulates interest; and it holds interest. I recommend it highly.

I finally feel like a programmer after working with this book.So often I read programming books and become lost in the theory part. It's nearly impossible to get lost in Diane Zak's book. She will 'hold your hand' and step you through everything while explaining what's going on. In each chapter you will program the example with the author. Following the lessons are loads of great sample problems and questions. My instructor said this is the best text book she has ever used -for any class. I agree 100%. I'm hoping other books by Diane Zak will live up to this one. Buy this book!

Great Programming Book for new programmers and VB students,
By
This review is from: Programming with Visual Basic 6.0, Enhanced Edition (Paperback)
I had to buy a copy...for my Visual Basic I online class in college. It's an online class so all the work is done on your own and this book is awesome. The book takes you step-by-step from designing, planning, and coding VB programs. It walks you through every stage of creating a program. Textbook is very detailed and accurate. There are tons of follow up questions at the end of each tutorial and there are plenty of programming exercises at the end of each tutorial as well. I plan on buying Intro to C++ by Diane Zak to study on my own and any other books she writes that I might be interested in as well. I would recommend any books by Diane Zak. I strongly recommend any of her titles.

This is an EXTREMELY good book as a starting point,

I have used several "beginner" texts on VB 6, but this one has to be the best. With most books I've seen or used, you start out writing a lot of code, the meaning of which isn't exactly clear. This book is different, as it tends to fill in all the holes and help you develop a good understanding of the language before delving into complex code examples. In addition, it emphasizes the planning and execution aspects of a project and helps you develop good coding techniques. If you are as new to computer programming as you are to VB 6, this is an excellent book to get started on.

Excellent book. Thanks Diane Zak for your innovative method of dealing with Visual Basic programming. Frankly, I have read many books about VB and failed to understand intricacies of the language. I always thought I would fail as a programmer. After going through her book and working on most of the tutorials I am now a confident programmer!!I would recommend this book to every person like me out there!

Excellent Book!,

I am currently working towards a BA in Information Technology and Diane Zak's VB 6.0 Enhanced Edition was the assigned text for my Programming for Windows course. It was actually not the choice of the college, but the instructor insisted this be the one we use; it's great. Diane's writing style is clear and concise. The lessons build at a good pace and the questions, exercises and discoveries really help me absorb all the information. The hands on practice, practice, practice approach is truly the best way to learn. Diane makes it all very easy to follow and understand, and I'm even having fun creating the projects. I haven't been able to say that about any other programming texts (C, C++) I've read in the past. I'm going to check out Diane's C++ next.
