5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, quickly progresses from beginning concepts
The authors start with very basic elements in the first 3 chapters: the IDE, form design, controls, properties, methods, datatypes, and variable scope, etc. But the book moves right along, by chapter 11, you're learning to access database files. 3.0 out of 5 stars good for a classrom book
good book as a classroom study, not so good as a self learner. lot's of info missing that you would get in an interactive environment, such as the exercise answers. and no website available for more info as many others provide. as a class text this is understandable as the students normally wouldn't have all the answers available to them except thru the teacher.

The authors start with very basic elements in the first 3 chapters: the IDE, form design, controls, properties, methods, datatypes, and variable scope, etc. But the book moves right along, by chapter 11, you're learning to access database files. The authors present the material with a very logical progression, I didn't find myself skipping around, which I had done with other books on the subject. The explanantions are concise, no boring filler here, but there are many examples of syntax and code. At the end of each chapter, a complete program is presented to bring everything together. I've attempted to learn Visual Basic with other books, but I wish I would have found this one first. It is written in a manner that anyone could understand, gives good code examples and the projects are enjoyable. I've recently started the Advanced version of this book and hope to move to the next level. I would definately recommend this book for any beginner in Visual Basic 6.

I finally found it!! I had checked this book out from a library and it was the exact kind of book I needed. If I remember right the ladies that wrote this book had written it for a Visual BASIC college class that they taught. It's mostly revolved around the necessities and doesn't stray away to off the wall graphics programs or anything dramatic, but maintains a clear learner's course of Visual BASIC. Plus, it doesn't try to teach you VB in one day, wich seems to be the trend of many popular books.

If you're tired of all those "Learn VB in X Hours" books then I'd recommend giving this a try. Heck, there's even a book out now called "Learn Visual Basic in Ten Minutes". lol

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners., December 17, 2002

When i purchased this book it was because i had to for a college course but i was already an intermediate programmer. Although i already knew most of the contents of the book, i couldnt help but notice if i had bought this book when i was first starting out i would have saved so much time and money. When i started i purchased 2 books one of them being from the **** for dummies collection which i would highly vote against doing and the other was too technical without enough explanation. This one is highly detailed and step by step, after each chapter it gives you a full rundown of the code with detailed notes. If your serious about learning VB6 i dont know of any other book out thatll get you programming well in such a short time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good investment, August 2, 2004
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 Update Edition with CD (Paperback)
Concise, precise and with hands-on examples of entire projects. This book is scattered with coloured screenshots to illustrate their instructions so you never have to guess what the authors mean. Targetted at the absolute beginner (in programming) but as it is a breeze to read, the more advanced reader is sure to pick up a few VB gems on his stroll through it.

I was lucky to stumble across this book in Amazon.com and didn't really know what I was getting. Once reading through the first chapters and trying some of the exercises I realize this is great. The book teaches you the correct way to program in simple descriptive language. I have now leant what I need to start my own small projects and have ordered the Advanced VB6 from the same authors, looking forward to getting it. The book also comes with the learning VB6.0 CD which gets you started.

1.0 out of 5 stars choose another, December 10, 2011
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 Update Edition with CD (Paperback)
this book is not for those who want to learn vb by doing but by reading. visual basic
is code, pure and simple. if you want to learn what happens when you press a button or
enter your name in a textbox you have to not only learn the coding but also have to
practice the coding several times. having an exercise or two at the end of a lengthy chapter with tons of coding to memorize is impractical, insufficient, and educationally
deficient. for those who know calculus it's like reading a chapter on derivatives and
having to learn 30 rules before doing any exercises. that's why good math books today
are broken up into small sections with problems to do at the end of each section.
bradley tries hard to teach the reader about vb using lengthy passages about coding but doesn't
explain in detail after the code is written what each line in the code actually does.
my recommendation for those wanting to learn vb- get a different book.
diane zak's is a 1000 times better-lots of hands-on exercises.

1.0 out of 5 stars The user decided to never send me my book, January 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 Update Edition with CD (Paperback)
I am completely unsatisfied, while the price was perfect for me after dropping thousands of dollars on classes this semester, this wonderful individual selling this product didn't bother to ship it or notify me that he/she wasn't going to ship it. Now I am going into my second week of class, and I have no book to use for it since I was waiting and hoping that he/she would send my order out late.

Considering that this is a textbook, it should be expected to provide a thorough and logically-arranged learning path; and, that is precisely what it does. The text begins at ground-zero and progresses through proper programming style, use of the language and included controls, and on into some rather advanced topics such as active-x control creation and programming of classes. This volume goes beyond what is supplied by Microsoft in terms of providing the student with a solid base of knowledge from which to blossom into a professional programmer. The information is all covered elsewhere, but this volume may be the single best journey throught the VB-6 landscape available and I would highly recommend it to anyone still using this excellent programming language. If you aren't using VB-6 but would like to if you could only get your hands on it, this book provides you with a copy of VB-6 on the included cd.
