Good for classroom , not for independant study,
By Richard Knott "galvyn" (Commerce, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 with Working Model CD-ROM (Paperback)
I really dont want to step on any toes here, but I must give my honest opinion. Having taken a college course in VB6 and using this book I can understand why the college chose this book, it is perfect for the classroom environment: which entails hands being raised due to unclear material. I complenented this reading with another VB6 book so I could understand the points better. I suggest this for any VB6 beginner. My suggestion to the authors is this: Please, whenever you are showing an example of the concept just made, don't just use a snippet of code that will not run on its own, but go right into a very small program to explain the code. That way we (beginners) can actually see and understand what was taught. I must not blame the writers too much, my instructor should never have been teaching the subject in the first place. Maybe it would have been different with someone who was current with and enthused about teaching VB6. For those of you who want to learn on your own, and you CAN do it because that's practically how i'm learning, buy Peter Wrights book on Beginning VB6. For those students who are using this book, if you finish the class while finishing all the required projects, you should be fine.

Difficult to follow and confusing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 with Working Model CD-ROM (Paperback)
I have been using this book for a college level vb course. Although it offers some good information, the examples were few and far between, difficult to follow, and we ran across numerous errors in the text and in some of the exercises/examples. I would recommend using the Step-By-Step books -- they seem to be more logical and comprehensive.

Confusing with Many Mistakes,
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 with Working Model CD-ROM (Paperback)
I recently used this book for a class and we found that the book was not clearly written. Examples tended to be quite different from the end of chapter exercises. I found that you constantly needed to turn to outside resources or use trial and error to achieve your goal. The book also does not use the most efficient methods of doing the programs. Disappointed that errors were not corrected before publication.

Confusing Layout makes this frustrating for a beginner,

I'm no programming genius so you readers can take this with a grain of salt. I am taking a VB class and this is the textbook. My instructor will explain something and it is easy to follow. I try to follow the explanation in the book and I get confused. For the absolute beginner like myself, I believe there needs to be a better structure to the contents. It almost seems like little steps have been left out and the book jumps to coding examples without entirely explaining the process. I would like to have seen some basic (no pun intended) explanations that (for example) take tool bar functions one at a time, like the text box, and then tell you how to create it and code all the various functions you will typically use. The book lacks a clear reference area that tells the ins and outs of text boxes (or whatever). Instead the book will mention the text box and gradually introduce you to the functions. That's fine, but when I'm trying to implement a specific function and don't remember how to do it, finding the specific information in this book will make you crazy because it's all spread out.

Why does this book always seem to get bad reviews elsewhere?,
By JRK "jkunz" (N.H.) - See all my reviews

I really like this book. I was forced to buy this in my very first Introduction to Visual Basic programming. My best advice for people interested in buying this book is make sure you are an absolute beginner to VB programming. Anyone with previous experience will find this book extremely dry. Even after developing Visual Basic for a year and a half, I still use this book as a reference when I'm reverting back to some of the basics of VB programming. Every possible beginning VB topic is covered, from Input Boxes to Message Boxes, If..Then..Else cases to Select cases. Enjoy.

A great book for BEGINNING programmers...,

This book seems to get poor reviews for some reason. This book is a great value because of its price and easy to use format. It is true that this book seems to be geared for BEGINNERS, but Visual Basic is a pretty BEGINNER style of programming. If you have programming experience, you may want to try more challenging books. If you are new to Visual Basic or programming altogether, this book is for you. It even comes with a CD which gives you a VISUAL BASIC 6.0 program to use! Overall the value is super. How many computer text books with the program included can you find for this reasonable of a price. So as others may find this book to "simple," I like the overall value, easy readability, and format of this book.

It is all about standards!,
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 with Working Model CD-ROM (Paperback)
I teach VB in a local Community College and I just love this book. Why? For one thing the book conforms to industry standard naming conventions. This is important and is missing in all of the other texts I have considered. You learn good programming from good programming examples and this text is full of them. Each chapter has a step by step learning within the chapter and a hands-on-example at the end of the chapter. There are lots of projects to choose from at the end of the chapter so if you can make the assignment simple or more advanced to fit your needs. I think students who actually do the in-chapter step-by-steps can learn the material on their own if they happen to miss my great class;)

The best Visual Basic book written,
By Jackie Willer-Vescio "astro_girl" (Long Canyon/Simi Valley, California USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 with Working Model CD-ROM (Paperback)
Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 is by far the best book for the beginning VB programmer. I still use the book today for quick reference. I tried other books and they just don't come close to this one. Concepts are clearly explained and there are plenty of examples in the book to practice your VB skills. I highly recommend this book.

It is a book for beginner who are willing to be tortured,
By A Customer
This review is from: Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 with Working Model CD-ROM (Paperback)
This is the first book I read about computer programming. I have no problem understanding the concepts introduced by this book. But the errors in the programming examples make this book a very frustrating one. I do not recommand this book for these who want to learn Visual Basic by themself. It is a good exercise for someone who knows VB to find out errors in this book.
