This review is from: Programming Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Developer Reference, 4th Edition (Perfect Paperback)
Extremely useful for C programmers with at least a little experience with Windows programming (event-based GUI programming at any rate). Written for native code (C, C++) programmers. Covers common controls, networking, device-to-device communication, multithreading, the registry, device driver programming ... fairly comprehensive list of topics. Does not cover direct X, audio, telephony. Up to date. Lots of complete code listings in the book. Downloadable resources from Microsoft Press website are excellent, more than just the source code for the examples in the book -- includes CE SDK for Visual Studio and an emulator. Highly recommended introduction to Win Mobile programming and exactly what I was looking for.

This book fulfils almost everything I was expecting.
It covers a broad scope of programming tasks for Windows CE. I would recommend it. Missing: some sort of media or link for source code samples. (Retype the contents of a 15 pages project?)

Native Windows CE programming essentials,

This review is from: Programming Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Developer Reference, 4th Edition (Perfect Paperback)
Douglas Boling knows much more than is written in this book. You can say that from reading his MSDN articles and from other people mentioning him in the blogs. Unfortunately, this book tries to cover too much topics without any advanced details.
But I've read through this book in spite of the fact that I initially read this book in 2nd edition and skimmed through 3rd edition in the past. I cannot really like the book because I was expecting that it would split in two parts: user-mode/UI development and kernel mode/system programming. Still I recommend it to any developer (even working with .Net Compact Framework) to become familiar with Windows CE programming. In fact, there is no other option, this is the only such book and it's quite good.

This book is a good book for programmers working on Windows CE based devices. The reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I think the section on drivers is a little thin.

PROS: This is a good overall book for those who are new to Windows CE 6.0, and who want to write for Windows CE. It is expected that the reader knows C/C++, and to some extent about Windows programming specifically, but Boling does a good job of not assuming the reader knows much about operating systems.
A variety of topics are discussed, including writing applications, dealing with user input (mice, keyboards), memory management, processes and threads in CE, Windows Registry, networking, etc. CONS: Similar to other reviewers, certain sections leave quite a bit to be desired, such as the device driver section. OVERALL: This book provides a good overview, but if you are serious about programming in Windows CE, you are going to need other resources as well.

In my opinion, it is a very usefull book.
It contains good descriptions of many aspects of CE 6.0, with code example and nessessary details for good insight into underlying principles.

This is a very good book if you know C++. The indicated SDK that is required to compile, is not available so none of the examples work asis. I would have given the book 5 stars otherwise.
