i highly recommend this book for those of you who stroll underneath the covers of nt. this was one of the few books that actually explained, with simplistic but detailed enough code examples about topics that are taboo to most authors. Areas such as the eventlog, services, the underpinnings of programmatic security. Enough information is provided so as not to overwhelm, yet stir up enough new thoughts to begin experimenting on your own. *****a bonus * to the author for being available to answer email questions related to the text.

Programming window services rocks,

The book provides an overview of common server types and implements a successful framework for each. The book describes exactly the evolution of my server before I read the book. I used the framework to create a smooth working server.

I reviewed this book before it came out. It has some good technical material and advice to those that want to write Services in Windows. The Author tries to cover everything that a developer would need to write industrial strength window Service Servers. However just keep in mind that the author is biased in favour of Microsoft and most Microsoft technologies. This book is very thin on content and provides only a shallow overview of NT service programming. It tries to cover far too much territory in too few pages. The author's C++ "framework" class for NT services makes some extremely naive assumptions, particulary with regard to processing SCM control messages. (See John Bell's article in the August 1998 C/C++ User's Journal for a much better C++ service framework.) This book is not a good place to learn about service programming from scratch; and if you already know the basics, this book has nothing new to tell you.

Well written book for those with an interest,
This review is from: Programming Windows(tm) Services: Implementing Application Servers (Paperback)
The services technology offers more. It offers us a bigger world. Services can form ad-hoc applications without the need for an installed infrastructure. This promise may be fulfilled because of the work in this book helps to develop specifications to assure interoperability. The author helps to develop the framework. The book contains an introduction to the technology and usage cases, It moves quickly to the technical details of the specification, discusses the profiles, and also provides a brief view of the future, Do not be fooled by the cover art; this is a serious book for those with a professional interest in services. The book is well written and has many well-drawn illustrations. If you like services, you will like this book.
