As a class book it falls very short,

Had to purchase for a class. As a class textbook, it fails. It is not written so that is is possible to do a pre-test review of the chapter without re-reading the whole chapter. For example, in the JavaScript (chapter 4) it introduces methods. It will mention the more useful methods in the text, then provide a table/chart/box with other methods for the same object. But it fails to include anything about the specific methods introduced in the text. Thus, there is not quick-reference of the methods you need a quick-reference for.
The author will also mention a method "in passing", then later attempt to build on the earlier information. The problem is, you can't find the earlier information easily because it was off-topic and none of the bold heading include it. So, you have to reread everything to find the initial reference. The book 'assumes' you know C++. There are a lot of items explained as 'just like in C++' or similar language. Since the course using this book did not require a pre-req of C++, many had to use other books or web tutorials to actually learn JavaScript. A strong knowledge of C++ is needed to follow the author though many of his discussions. As with many textbooks, it tries to cover too much to the point that it sacrifices depth. I found it overpriced. For the same money, I could have purchased several subject specific books that would have been better textbooks for the subject being covered. Many of my textbooks find a place on my shelf as a quick reference guide for latter projects. This one will not. It will be sold as soon as I no longer need it for class.

This was a textbook for my web development class. Excellent textbook for learning a wide variety of web development technologies. You will not be an expert, but it will get your feet wet for sure.

While I bought this book for school, I also have learned quite a lot. It is written in an easy to read format and is also filled with examples. A great way to start learning.
