This guy really knows what he is talking about and this is by far the best book on macro programming that I have ever come across.

I'm using this book to write a custom macro and assign it to a G code that I can use in any program I write.

I have Peter Smid's CNC Programming Handbook (which I highly suggest). I almost bought Smid's Macro programming book before I saw this. This book is $20-30 cheaper than Smid's book, and I am quite impressed with it. The description's table of contents is accurate; it covers a lot of useful topics. The explanations of the basics of macro programming are very clear. As long as you have experience with general CNC programming, you can follow the explanations. It does help to have previous computer programming experience, though. There are multiple chapters dedicated to applications of macro programming with plenty of examples. There are also a lot of very good programming tips throughout the book that will save new programmers some hassle debugging programs.

The book focuses on Fanuc controls (the Fanuc 0i, in particular). However, the shop I work for uses Haas machines, and I have found that Haas's implementation of macros is quite standard. The mapping of system variables matches very closely to the book's description.

There is absolutely no wasted space in the 200+ pages here. Covers mostly everything, and gives you an understanding of the macro concept well enough to continue developing your understanding on your own. Since reading I have devised 2 practical macro applications in the shop I work in. It is necessary to be familiar with the cnc process already and the codes that accompany the process, but once you are this book expands your knowledge well beyond that of your peers. Some subjects are rather complex that relate to more advanced features of macros (communicating with external devices, PLC's and the like) but that gives you an idea of where to go after mastering the macro language.

This covers a lot of introductory aspects of macro programming like construction, and how to layout code, and defines the characters and functions well as advanced stuff. I bought this book because I recently got a job that uses macros. the only thing I did not like about the book is the lack simplicity and understanding of some of the examples. I just found they didn't dumb it down enough for the new guys or i would have given 4 stars. i think it is a must have for reference with macro programming.

You need this book if you're into Fanuc Macro B programming. Very useful as a reference book. Helpful explanations for While, IF, THEN, loops, subprograms you name it. Explains Global and Local variables very well too. I spend a good portion of my day either programming or debugging programs that I didn't write myself. I wouldn't be without this book!

I'm using this book to write a custom macro and assign it to a G code that I can use in any program I write. I highly recommend this book.

More About the Author

Dr. S. K. Sinha is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (India). He obtained Master's degree and Doctorate also from the same institute. Being a CNC enthusiast, he has published a book on basic CNC programming as well as another one on macro programming ("CNC Programming using Fanuc Custom Macro B," published by McGraw-Hill, New York) among several of his publications. Presently, he is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi (India).

His latest publications are e-books (Kindle edition) in the series, "CNC Programming Skills."

The first book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Program Entry and Editing on Fanuc Machines," which gives complete, yet concise and step-by-step information on editing procedures using the MDI panel. It is purposefully in the form of a convenient e-book because one would often need to refer to it as it is difficult to memorize all the editing steps which are many a time too complex and devoid of common logic so as to make the correct guess. One may refer to the book-description section on its product page in Kindle Store for more information. The CNC users can have it on their Kindle or even on their smart phones (with the free Kindle app installed on these) which are always with them. There is no need to have access to thick Fanuc manuals for this purpose.

The second book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Understanding G73 on a Fanuc Lathe." Its publication was inspired by the fact that most people, just because of ignorance, do not use such a powerful canned cycle G73 even when it has got a perfect application. With G73 thoroughly understood, the manual part programming would never be the same again!

The third book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Live Tool Drilling Cycles on a Fanuc Lathe." These days higher-end lathes come equipped with live-tooling arrangement, allowing drilling, boring and tapping anywhere on the face of the workpiece, as well as in the radial direction at any angular position. To facilitate these operations, a number of built-in canned cycles are available which are explained in the book with suitable examples in quite detail so as to cover nearly everything a programmer needs to know about them.
With this book in your hand, you would not need to refer to any other book or manual for the purpose of efficiently using these canned cycles, nor would any guidance from any programming expert be needed.

The fourth book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Understanding Offsets on Fanuc Machines." The very first thing which a CNC operator/programmer needs to know is how to setup the coordinate system for machining. The machining coordinate system is defined by adding relevant offsets to the pre-defined machine coordinate system. This book explains everything one needs to know about offsets.

The method of presentation in these books is such that one would be able to learn the concepts on one's own, without requiring any external help in the form of another book or a trainer. Very little background is assumed.

Some more books are planned in this series.
