Instrumental version is the diamond in the rough,
By A Customer
This review is from: Progression Sessions 5 (Audio CD)
Of this 2 cd set, devotees will probably agree that the instrumental version is the better of the two cd's. As an owner of just about every Bukem disc available, I can definitevely say that the vocals provided on disc 1 can be done without. There are some fantastic tracks on this disc but MC Conrad and DRS seem to be going through the motions of idly rambling through some of the tracks rather than meshing lyrics and beats as in previous Progression Sessions'. Point being, invest in this set and enjoy disc 2 without the vocals. Track 4 is one of my favorites as is track 10. Big Bud's tracks are also choice material.

I was eagerly anticipating the release of this mix - I think almost everything Good Looking has touched for about the last three years has been outstanding.I normally really like the MC'ing of Conrad and particularly DRS but on this CD, it's just total overkill - there's barely a pause, and while some of the lyrics are cool, it's all just a bit much. Thankfully, there's an instrumental version included. The opening four tracks are excellent but after that is a track by MC Conrad which just isn't happening, "Close to the Source", which is by far the worst track on LTJ's album and three totally anonymous tracks which passed me by completely. A recovery at the end is led by a brilliant track by Makoto and a lovely bouncy piece by Big Bud. The Good Looking Organisation is the coolest and best label (s) there are - you really expect more from them. As a CD, it's not bad but when compared with previous stuff by Mr Bukem, it's pretty week.

Disappointing,

Sorry people, but I found this one disappointing, the continual mix seems to go on a bit, not like Bukem's other stuff at all.It does indeed sound like the live set he played last year, but somehow there just isn't enough variety. The second CD being purely instrumental is a bit of a rip off really.

I bought this album shortly before seeing LTJ and MC Conrad play live in Tallahassee, Florida. The show was amazing and this album captures the performance brilliantly. While not recorded live, there is a definite energy about the whole album with the ebbs and flows in all the right places. Conrad's vocals blend effortlessly into LTJ's silky smooth mixes and to havw one without the other would be wrong. Brilliant.

This album is increadible,

Although some of the lyrics are well recycled from the other Progression Sessions, the beats make this album absolutelly unique. I can't believe anyone can mix d'n'b so well. While not quite as intense as PS4, this album is still a top notch production. Extremelly groovy, easy to get into right from the get go, this disk made me upgrade my car stereo.

This is another intelligant album from the man they call bukem. Made all the more better for the represantaion of conrad and drs. The 2 cds comprise of an instumental set and a mc set, where the two mcs conrad and drs show how to tear it up on the mike without bigin every one up and shouting for the rewind. A must have for all seasoned drum and bass fans.

LTJ has done it again. Bukem performs his acetate wizardry the way James Bond deals with his enemies. Effortlessly. I guess that would make MC Conrad Bond's Walther PPK... Not too far from the truth as he mercilessly dominates the scene with his sharp-shoot rhythmic punctuation and orthoepy of marathonic proportions. More like a sub machine-gun really. This number of Progression Sessions flows smoothly from start to end. Tracks from Pariah, Nu Moon, J-Laze and Itersperse bring fresh energy to the sound while Makoto, coaching his younger brother, brings in the mellow element. If you put Big Bud and Lacarno onto any record, well, you've got my number then. One of the things I like about the Good Looking Series is that they stay more or leas the same. Thus you always know what you're getting. (The possible exception being the Earth series, but as it changes in a... ...logical manner, that's ok.) I wouldn't want it to change to something new (they can always spawn new labels if they want), rather change to new ways of doing the same thing. The second CD testifies to Makoto's musical prowess. The Japanese version features a completely new mix from Shimizu-san instead of the now standard, instrumental-rip-off-mix, they put in the package in Europe and USA. Aaahh. This is why I love Japan! (Actually, that's why I hate it too, when I'm unable to buy records there and also when I am able to do so, but I see the price.) Enough on fishy label policy. The mix is top-notch. Makoto knows his stuff and now he can concentrate a bit more on his smiling. For mentioning one, Akira's Yellow River (...or was it Liver?.. Ok. Ok. Bad joke.) proves that Makoto needn't stand around the backstage's corner and worry anymore. [....]

There isnt much to say. If you are a LTJ Bukem fan, then this is a must buy. It is like his previous progression session albums, but in this one, you have both MC Conrad, and DRS rippin up the tracks with their superior vocals. It is nonetheless a must buy. It is extremely similar to Progression Sessions Vol. 4. Travel Star by newly GLO artist Makoto is really good. I also like Close to the Source by Bukem himself. The import version has 2 cd's. One is with MC Conrad and DRS, and the other is just the music. I am not quite sure if the American release will be the same. FOR ANYONE WHO DOESNT KNOW WHO LTJ BUKEM IS......I recommend this cd, and also Logical Progression Vol. 1. Bukem does it again. Check out his website.
