Great beginner book,
By "telerookie" (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Progressive Guitar Method - Book 1 (Paperback)
I have been teaching myself guitar from various sources for about 9 months and this was the first book that actually got me to read music and not tab(there aren't any tabs to follow). There is also a good linear progression and enough theory used so as not to overwhelm the reader. Most of the songs in the book are familiar enough so that you know what they are supposed to sound like without the enclosed CD. The CD is still very helpful for all the exercises. I have since bought 3 more books in this series but have yet to finish them all.

I know nothing about playing guitar, and with this book and DVD that came with it, I'm catching on. You don't learn any chords with this book, so I suggest getting progressive guitar chords to go with it.

A very good introductory instructional manual with CD,
By A Customer
This review is from: Progressive Guitar Method - Book 1 (Paperback)
I recently completed this manual and I have purchased the second in the series. I liked the idea of a short, lightweight and inexpensive manual that approaches guitar instruction systematically. I am learning the guitar using a few instructional manuals. This manual was the least "overwhelming".

I need 2 more pages to finish the book and I can certainly say it has helped me to pursue my dream of becoming a good guitar player.

Excellent Method Primer!,

This review is from: Progressive Guitar Method - Book 1 (Paperback)
I bought this book about five years ago around this time in the fall of 99 and let me tell you this was without a doubt the best primer book on learning the guitar out there,it's easy to learn with it's large musical notations and it's mini pictorials on each lesson page/s.It contains about fifty pages and includes a page on basic chords and also a music glossary at the end. This book was what started me in my guitar career. With this book to start off and daily practice you could achieve your goals as an accomplished guitarist.Once you get passed this book I do recommend the progressive series method books to follow.

I'm just starting to learn guitar and so I wanted something that would give me the basics. This book is perfect for that. It includes everything you need to know and makes it easy to understand.

I teach guitar lessons, and I have used this book as my starter book for 3 or 4 years now. I find that not only does it teach the basics, but it goes slow enough for young students, and if you skip a couple exercises a week, it goes fast enough for very talented students. The layout is also very friendly looking, so that it doesn't scare kids as much as some other methods.

i got this book a few months ago, i didnt know a anything about playing guitar and reading sheet music, this book made it easy and fun because you start out playing a song most people know and not just playing notes that dont make a song like many other books will.

I've tried to learn to play guitar several times in my life. This time, I got this book, and I have made more progress in a couple of weeks than I did in years of trying to learn it on my own. I would recommend this to anyone starting out. I've already bought three other method books by this author, including rhythm, and am about to purchase the fingerpicking method book. Very well done.

I have instructed guitar for over ten years, and I use this book with my beginner guitar students. It is presented in a very logical format, the exercises are very good, and the CD and DvDs provide a great resource for the student while they are practicing in preparation for the next lesson. I recommend it highly for beginning students and for guitar instructors.
