I am the designated pie maker for Thanksgiving and Christmas, which I love doing, except for cutting the apples. It seems like such a simple chore, but it's time consuming and makes my hand cramp and my skin dry. So, this year, I decided to indulge and give an apple slicer a try. Of course, I needed one which cut the slices thin, or I would still wind up cutting. So I got the Progressive Thin Apple Slicer.

The first try, I was sitting at the table, with an unpeeled Gala apple in front of me. It didn't work out too well. My brain then kicked in, and I realized that leverage was going to be necessary. So the next one, I stood over the unpeeled apple and shoved that slicer through. I flipped it over and snapped the lid closed to push the pieces through the blades. Boom. 16 beautifully cored slices of apple. Angels sang, I tell you.

Peeling each individual slice was a bit of a pain, so I went ahead and peeled the rest of the apples before using the slicer. The corer almost always got everything, without wasting a ton of apple flesh. For the few slices that still had a little bit of seed or core left on them, it was a simple matter to chop it off. The slices were uniform, thin enough to cook beautifully, and were done easily. Before I knew it, I had far, far more apple slices than I needed for the single apple pie I intended to make. So we had two deep dish, overflowing apple pies instead, and it was wonderful.

Tips for those who purchase this:
*Stand when you're using it; you get much better leverage.
*Set the apple on it's head to slice; it balances better that way.
*Peel the apple first (I'm getting a peeler for Christmas, you bet).
*Use the plastic cover to push the pieces back through the blades, and not your finger. Those blades are sharp!

I had a good quality apple slicer that was OK, but the slices were too big for pies. This one works much better. Not only are the slices smaller, but the plastic bottom part really does make the peeled apples pop right out. (Yes, it does work better to peel the apple first.) The coring section is also slightly larger than my other one, and it gets the more of the core out, but it's not too large. I was unable to find anything similar to this in the stores. Home bakers should definitely consider this one.

Update: I've had this for 8 months now and still like it. I did discover that you can peel just around the top and bottom and it works just as well as if you peel the entire apple. This is good if you like unpeeled slices. I do this sometimes when I want to eat fresh apple slices. I'm not sure if I made it clear in my original review that you slice first with the plastic bottom open then snap it closed and push down to pop the apple out. Works like a charm every time.

Update: I've had this slicer for almost 2 years now, and somehow I recently managed to break the plastic ring that goes around the blades. I'm still using it, but it's much harder to push down, now that it's broken. So I guess that means that it's time to order a new one.

I've been searching for a 16 slice apple slicer for a long time - finding a quality one was the trick. The plastic blade cover is permanently attached and after initially pushing through the apple (with the cover flipped out of the way) you flip the cover back into place and give it a final small push to snap it into place and all the apple pieces come loose. Nicely made and if you have braces or other dental issues that make biting/chewing larger slices an issue this is a great find. Would work great for peeled apples as well since the slices are the perfect size for several baking recipes.

This 16 section slicer is good for thinner wedges of apple. The only problem is that it takes a lot of strength to cut through an apple. Sometimes I also use an 8 section slicer which does not take so much strength.

But watch your apple size. You need to use average size apples, the large ones I get at Costco won't fit.

I used sliced apples as a topping on pancakes several times a week. My former slicer made large wedges, which I then had to cut in half. This one makes perfect slices..just the size you'd want for eating apple slices with cheese or peanut butter.. Worth every penny.

I wanted an apple slicer that made more slices than the traditional eight, and found it! It works well, creates neat slices, and the cover keeps it safe for storage and is an amazing help to finish slicing the apple. My kids were impressed!
