4.0 out of 5 stars Works great, wishing for different blades!
I bought this slicer specifically because all the other that are similar in function only dice or make sticks. I wanted one that would do slices, because mandolines are a pain and often dangerous. This one works great, but the blades are at least 1/4" apart, which is actually pretty thick. You won't be making chips with this one! I wish there were other styles of blade...

1.0 out of 5 stars worst product I've purchased
On the surface, this looks like the wonder product. It slices! It dices! It's from Starfrit! Well, looks are deceiving. The insert for the blade does not fit securely enough into the container. Each time you press down and slice something, the whole insert pulls out with the pusher and lid. Each time I had to pry the blade and insert out of the lid and pusher, reinsert...

On the surface, this looks like the wonder product. It slices! It dices! It's from Starfrit! Well, looks are deceiving. The insert for the blade does not fit securely enough into the container. Each time you press down and slice something, the whole insert pulls out with the pusher and lid. Each time I had to pry the blade and insert out of the lid and pusher, reinsert it, place the vegetable, push down to slice/dice, then repeat. I finally gave up and switched back to my Nicer Dicer. It may not slice as well, but it works perfectly every time! I would not recommend this Starfrit for purchase.

Tried to slice lemons like in the picture, but got lemonade. Wouldn't cut it at all. Followed the directions by cutting off the ends so the lemon would fit and sinking it into the blades to get it started. But all it did was squish it. Sliced some cheese and it worked ok. Seemed like a lot of strength needed for a soft food.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible dull blades, August 19, 2010

i bought this because i have always in the past had good products from progressive (my RV kitchen is filled with their gadgets :) ), in fact i even through out the box before tried it. This product does not work. I bought it specifically to slice tomatoes, cukes, and onions quickly and evenly... like the restaurant machine i have seen. but this just squishes the tomatoes -- the blades aren't sharp enough to slice. I tried an onion - and was not able to push hard enough to get it to slice - in fact i think its completely useless for me (maybe something super soft like strawberries)... unfortunately without a box i cannot return it either.. so its just a waste. also on a side note -- the little cleaner fork is sized oddly so that it does not fit into the item for storage - which means storing it elsewhere, meaning in all likelihood it will be lost...

I purchased this product to slice onions. You have to press really really hard to push the onion thru. Most women do not have the strength to push a whole onion thru. It does not work for onions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for cutting potatoes into fries - adding a caveat at a later date, June 19, 2010
This review is from: Progressive International Tower Slicer (Kitchen)
We've used a couple of the horizontal type french fry cutters which seem to require a lot of strength, limit the length of the potato that will fit, and "shoot" the cut potatoes all over the counter. This tower solves all those problems. Potato strips are contained in the lower bin, it takes minimal strength to force the potato through the blades. I've also used the wedger (very neat, even wedges for roasting potato logs, and the slicer works well for hard-boiled eggs and firmer vegetables such as carrots. I agree that it isn't really a tomato slicer. We've never had a problem with the blade or push attachment coming loose as one reviewer commented. This is not an industrial product meant for use in a restaurant; however, it costs a fraction of those. I believe with reasonable care it will last a long time and we're extremely pleased with this kitchen tool.

a month later: Whoa! I've made a mistake. The actual item we have is the one with the french fry cutter and wedger as well as slicer. Apparently this model is only a slicer. I guess the price should have triggered more research on my part -and I was about to order a number of these for Christmas presents. Glad I caught this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good deal, January 3, 2012

I agree with the other reviewer who said that the blade sometimes sticks on and comes out. This happens when I try to fill up with a lot of vegetables to dice/slice. Also, not being that strong, I usually keep this on the floor and use both my arms in pushing down the vegetables (especially the hard ones such as carrots or potatoes). However, I get even slices and the work still gets done in less time than if I had used a regular kitchen knife. My sister was the first to use it and she has the one with other blades as well and she got one each for both my mom and me for Christmas. I love it! Very useful. Especially in having to quickly dice/slice onions and tomatoes which I use in most recipes. I would have loved more blades, one with which I can get thinner slices, and more options like grating as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier with my tower slicer, September 23, 2011
This review is from: Progressive International Tower Slicer (Kitchen)
I bought one thinking that it would be useful for canning. I've used it making salsa, pickled beets, etc. For slicing it was incredible, reducing slicing time for vegetables to a minimum. I also wish that it came with a couple of different width blades. For items that are more dense such as potatoes, it takes more arm power to push down on the the top. For someone with limited hand strength,I would recommend cutting the vegetables into smaller pieces before putting them in the slicer. I do not use it a lot, but when I need it, it is a real timesaver. I would not be without it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great!, September 14, 2010
This review is from: Progressive International Tower Slicer (Kitchen)
I really like this gadget. It's NOT for soft foods. I use it for mushroom slices for pizza night, for dicing carrots, onion and celery for main dishes, works great on potatoes, strawberries, apples etc. I use the dice part with carrot to make long carrot sticks. Radishes come thru with ease. It is NOT for tomatoes or anything soft like that. I have never had a problem with the insert sticking to the pusher portion except for one time when I inserted it upside down and I quickly figured out it was MY mistake because it had never done that before. Also you can put 2 blades/inserts inside the container, one on top and then put the lid over all and it stores conveniently all in one piece, which I appreciate. For the price, this is definitely a time saver that works for me and I really like it. It has a prominent spot in my cupboard as I use it often. (Just realized that MY model has 3 blades, a slicer, a dicer/french fry cutter, and a wedge for apples, etc. This one only has the slicer. Sorry about that!)
