i needed a 9-10" set of tongs with silicone tips and well-located finger grips, and tongs which also securely locked when not in use. these tongs replaced the other two brands i've been using, an improvement in every way.
i do prefer orka 1-piece silicone spatulas, but orka didn't seem to offer a set of silicone tongs the right length with silicone gripper strips that are long enough for the way i hold and use the tongs. what good is a short strip of silicone 2-3 inches from the top?
not a problem with these tongs. not once have my hands slipped, not once has food dropped or flown due to fingers slipping and the tongs flying open. lol.
although wonderful tongs all the way around, ultimately it is the great placement of the silicone grippers that really makes this the perfect tool.

UPDATE APRIL 2012: Regarding Orka 12-inch Stainless and Silicone Tongs in Blue: On the Orka tongs, the actual tongs, not counting the loop, are 1/8" shy of 11 inches. The actual tongs are almost two inches longer than the Progressive 9-inch tongs. The 12-inch measurement includes the loop.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I couldn't decide what length tongs I wanted, so I ordered both these tongs and the Orka 12-inch Stainless and Silicone Tongs in Blue.

Although I ultimately chose the Orka, here are some reasons to choose these tongs:

1. If you prefer the 9-inch length, this is a great choice for tongs.
2. Space saving - fit easily into a utensil drawer.
3. These are heat-resistant to 600° Farenheit and will get the job done.

The 12-inch tongs are also gripper tongs like these. They have blue grips on the side. I chose them because I want a little more distance between my hands and any popping grease. In addition, the silicone grips are large and flexible, making it easy to grasp and turn just about anything, even when food is sticking. I also like that they are heat-resistant to 570° Fahrenheit. (UPDATE APRIL 2012: When I purchased them, they were heat-resistant to 570°F but that changed to 400°F. UPDATE AUGUST 10 2012: As of this writing the heat resistant information is no longer on the 12" tongs page, so I have contacted Amazon and asked them to please check on the current rating. It was last printed at 400°F which would be a reason to stick with these 9-Inch tongs, unless Orka has increased it.)

Coming from a background of using the more traditional scissor-like tongs, I was a bit apprehensive as to whether I could adjust to this style of tong, but I did so with no problem.

Silicone utensils are recommended by some manufacturers of stainless steel cookware, like All-Clad and Cuisinart, to keep from scratching stainless steel cookware. They also work great with nonstick cookware and hard anodized cookware.

I first became interested in acquiring silicone tongs after I purchased the Cuisinart Multiclad Pro Stainless Steel 12-piece Cookware Set. I have been thrilled with silicone utensils as they absolutely will not scratch my stainless.

Highly recommended.

When I first received the silicone gripper tongs it work okay on lighter items. As I continue to use it in frying heavier foods like chicken, pork chops, steaks and even trying to turn bacon, it does not grip firmly or lift these items out of the pan without falling off from the grip. Stainless steal tongs work better and has a better grip. I thought the silicone gripper tongs would be more resourseful, especially using them in a non-stick pan. I am disappointed and not happy with these tongs.

I love them. My old tongs suddenly died of old age one day. I guess it was a serious flaw in their construction as they were only 20 years old. :) I found these on-line with Amazon and was impressed with the rubber tips and the strip of rubber on the handles. They are very comfortable to use. I have washed them on the upper and lower shelf of my dishwasher and cannot see any degradation in the product due to use or washing method.

To lock them, you simply press the tongs together and pull up on the ring tab at the end. Simple! My cooking averages between cooking for two or cooking enough to avoid starvation. In other words, I'm an indifferent cook and am not into 18 pound turkeys or hams. These tongs work well for my type of cooking, and I do recommend them. Actually I have two pair. One is a spare for when the other is dirty and it's not time to run the dishwasher yet. Both are still working as advertised.

Progressive International appears to make a very good product.

I really like the design of this, but the silicone grip area is too wide for my liking. I prefer my old Oxo 9inch metal end, I feel that I have more control without the silicon.

I had noticed the chefs on cooking shows using this type of tongs. They're really useful, especially to protect non-stick cookware.

I AM WELL PLEASED WITH THESE TONGS. THIS IS THE ONLY
BRAND I COULD FIND WITH GRIPPERS. I DID NOT WANT ANY
LONGER THAN THE 9 INCHES. I THINK THIS LENGTH IS PERFECT.
THEY WERE SO GREAT I BOUGHT MY THREE DAUGHTERS A PAIR ALSO.

These adjustable and locking tongs are the greatest! We like lobster and other slippery items so the locking feature is a definite plus. The fact that they aren't metal and don't rust is just another reason I am replacing all of my utensils.

These are excellent tongs with a wide-grip silicone covered tips.

I color code my kitchen. I recently had a baby and a lot of the baby stuff I bought (not on purpose) is green. Like my Boon grass bottle/dish rack, the OXO TOT baby line of cups, bowls, and utensils, etc. All green. I got two of these to use for removing hot items out of my baby bottle steam/sterilizer or out of boiling water if I'm boiling the baby stuff. I also steam heat baby food in a small dedicate pan made into a makeshift double boiler by adding a stainless steel bowl and water inside. So I use the tongs to lift the inner bowl out when the food is hot.

The color matches all the other green stuff I have perfectly. There is no mistake that green is for the baby and other colors are for everything else. The silicone tong ends grips are very wide compared to all other tongs I have. They are like curved spatulas and they grip the glass and plastic bottles and varioius baby utensil pieces perfectly. I've never dropped anything. And it's easy on the hands. After doing loads and loads of baby dishes, my hands don't get tired from operating the tongs. They are easy to lock and unlock and I like how the locking lever is silicone covered too because sometimes I have to operated it with my teeth or push it against my arm when my hands are full. And it's nice and soft and padded. I have no compliants about these and would buy more in other colors for other uses in the future.

I highly recommend these. I use them for baby stuff but I'm sure they are great for gripping/flipping food as well. if you want a more streamlined/tapered/smaller tong tip, the Mastrad Orka tongs are great, too, and come in a variety of lengths and great colors.

Especially purchased these tongs for their small size and not disappointed. They have great grip, the locking device keeps them closed in your utensil drawer and because I love RED in the kitchen, the RED is really good color. They will grab slippery raw chicken breasts and keep a good hold when using in frying oil. They do take a little getting used to - "How difficult could this be you ask?" - well, it's just a matter of knowing the thickness and weight of food, along with the slipperiness ( is that a word?). I do not use a dishwasher so don't know how they hold up with that, but they wash just fine. The small size make them easier to use in a small frypan, without extending out so far. I think they're great.
