This product would not cut through a sweet potato. It barely went through a piece of a regular potato. While cutting through a potato it was bending and felt like it would break. It's fairly cheap, but you get what you pay for. I ended up using a knife instead. It's your $8.99...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast and easy French Fry cutter, March 15, 2002

The product itself get 5 stars for ease and functionality and 4 stars for a cleaning problem and lack of accessories.

In the package are 2 different sized blade grates and push blocks that are easily assembled and removed from the main body by depressing a small lever and turning a latch, respectively. Cutting capacity is less than 4 inches in length. You'll have to "cut" large Russets before "cutting!"

Clean-up is mostly easy, if you have a baby bottle nipple brush to poke through the grate holes and cross brush the push blocks (a toothbrush for the latter works also). However, the main body has slots where the push block slides. This area collects and traps small potato fragments and is difficult to clean.

I would like to see different shaped blade grates, just for the heck of it. You never know what strange moods you will be in!? I would enjoy a larger capacity in the main body, but this would cause more strength to cut the potatoes. Right now, there's a good compromise between capacity and cutting effort.

Don't forget to double fry your potatoes: about 2-3 minutes at 325F, pat dry, then about 5 minutes or golden brown at 375F.
You can check the cooking sites for variations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but should be larger, April 7, 2005

This is an excellent cutter, that comes with several different size blade fittings (for thinner or thicker fries). It sets up very easily, and can be easily disassembled and popped into the dishwasher.
The one complaint I have is that the blade base should be a bit bigger so that large spuds can be passed through without having to cut the spud into smaller bits first.
The lever arm is a bit short, so that my wife has asked me to cut the potatos - since some weight has to be put into operating the lever.
It makes uniformly cut fries, that cook evenly. It makes the joy of fresh cut fries accessible to more people - so please skip the frozen fries and give yourself a real treat!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jumbo is better, November 26, 2003

I bought this product a while ago, and it is fine, except you have to cut up the potato, etc.

I just received today, a Progressive JUMBO Potato Cutter that I saw in a catalog. Progressive now makes a cutter that is larger, and can cut the whole potato. Perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost too cool for words, January 1, 2001

I had my doubts whether or not this was worth the money, but it works like a dream. It cuts preparation time to next to nothing and the resulting fries were perfect. In fact, I usually end up fixing more fries than I need because it really is fun to use! Two comments for prospective buyers: first, the fries come shooting out fairly quickly, and I've found it helpful to put a bowl in the kitchen sink, and then set the cutter on the counter above. Otherwise, you might end up with some on the kitchen floor as I did the first time I used it. Second, if you have larger potatoes it seems to work better if you cut them in half first.

i had previously broken a good cooks french fry cutter and was desperate for a new more sturdier and better cutter. i was a little skeptical about buying this one. i make a lot of fries and i dislike cutting them by hand. when i received this cutter i noticed it was a little smaller than my last model but thats where my skepticism ended.
this slicer has such a smooth glide. it actually pushes the potato through the blade so you get an even thorough cut. if you have a large potato you may have to cut it in half but who cares. this is a wonderful cutter i recommend it to everyone.

One of the best little gadgets I have ever used, and use it I do! I am still finding new uses for it. Some examples: apples-for pies, frying, fruit salads, onions, etc. The thing to remember is to make sure that whatever you put in to slice, needs to fit. If for example the potato is larger than the square blade grid it will be very difficult to push it through. So take a bit off the top when the veggie is too large. (I had to learn this through trial, error and aggravation.)I wanted to write this to hopefully save someone else from the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two hands for one hand cutter, May 4, 2006

In my quest to cut potatoes into french fries without removing any of my fingers, I picked up this international and progressive French fry cutter. Now I am not sure what makes this cutter international or progressive, but it does cut. The size of the unit is somewhat smaller than I would have preferred which results in somewhat smaller fries. However, the cutter performs the task fairly well. Although the grip is made for one hand, be prepared to have your other hand close to give it a err...hand. Quite a bit of force is required to complete the cutting task. Not so much that you need heavy machinery, but enough that I was surprised.

For an intermittent tool in your kitchen arsenal that costs under $10, I say this cutter is a good buy. Happy cutting!

1.0 out of 5 stars Greatly Disappointed -- A $$$ waste, January 22, 2003
This review is from: Progressive International Vegetable/French Fry Cutter (Kitchen)
I just used this for the first time tonight and was quite disappointed. I have not yet tried the large size cutter but the regular-sized cutting blade simply did not work. It was a struggle between me and the potato-cutter. I was pushing so hard, with the potato still not being cut by the blades, that I could actually see the outer portion of the handle bending. I doubt it will be long before it breaks completely. When I finally managed to force (not "push" but "force") the potato through the blade, it would jump the cutter across the counter due to the pressure I had to use, then, of course, it was only halfway through the potato. I'll go back to my 20-year-old cutter that pushes evenly through the top rather than fight with a vertical handle that seems to work against the laws of physics.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the price it's a steal, December 18, 2002

This cutter is a great bargain. You should note that it can take some effort to push a good sized tater through, maybe this isn't for your arthritic grandmother, but once you get the potato started the rest is easy.
One tip - since you have to cut any large potato to fit, be sure to place the pointed (natural) end of the potato towards the blades rather than the flat cut end. This makes it MUCH easier!

Overall, a super bargain.
