These Italian breadcrumbs can always be found in my cupboard. I use them when I am pressed for time and don't have suitable bread lying around to make my own. I've found them totally suited to a wide range of recipes; everything from pork to chicken to veggie casseroles. In fact tonight I made the classic "French's Green Bean Mushroom-soup casserole" without the 'fried onions' because my kids aren't big fans of onions and the crumbs added just a wonderful amount of Italian flavor.
If you aren't familiar with this product, the consistency is very much like sand. So if you are seeking a Panko-type large crumb, this wouldn't be a good alternative. The flavoring is exactly like you would find if you added pre-mixed Italian seasoning to breadcrumbs. In fact, I've done that to flavorless homemade and store-bought Panko crumbs as a substitute.
The single drawback of this product is the extraneous ingredients that they've had to add to prolong the shelf life. Besides that they contain partially hydrogenated oil and various Sulfate compounds (ferrous, calcium, aluminum) as well as a list of ingredients that mystify me, like: yeast, honey, oat bran, and... yuck, high fructose corn syrup. Thus I've taken away a star because one would think a quality product would consist of fewer 'surprise' ingredients.
Still, they are very useful.
