5.0 out of 5 stars One word...Wow, April 26, 2003

This review is from: Project 86 (Audio CD)
For those seriously shopping for a new CD and are considering this one, ignore all the other reviews that keep saying "this CD rocks! Buy it!" While I agree, remember that no matter how many comparisons Project gets to P.O.D., they are not P.O.D. If you're looking for a more melodic sound, stick with P.O.D. or some of Project's later releases.
As for this CD, expect only two things. Hard, driving guitar chords with a driving beat, and lyrics that are best described as poetic. This is one of those few CD's where I can sit down and read the lyrics and get as much out of them as listening to the music.
This CD really shows Andrew Schwab's intentions when writing a song. Not to make you sing along or tap your foot, but to make you think. Sometimes he does this job all too perfect. I often find that the words of this CD get stuck in my head more than the music itself.
So, before you click that button to put this in your basket, remember to do a few things. Listen to the samples, ask yourself if you're in the mood for deep thinking, and check to make sure your walls are strong enough for you to slam into them without breaking.

5.0 out of 5 stars projecting the true powe of music, February 1, 2000

At the forefront of the current heavy music revolution is the Southern California influenced rapcore scene. With so many Adidas-donning commercial heros capitalizing on this up-and-coming street level sound it is difficult to imagine anything not of the cookie-cutter mold coming out of the genre. There is however, one California band that is staying true to their own musical directions and creating in-your-face metal outside of the corporate circle. Though California natives Project 86 are not breaking any new ground with their self-titled debut on BEC records they are however infusing new life into this now commercialized sound and making bodies move. Touting their own unique song writing flavor, P86 have carved themselves out a niche in the new-school metal world that is uniquely their own. At times, it seems as they have collectively infused the progressive sound of Tool with the hardcore smarts of Biohazard and the flow and feel of older Rollins Band. The conglomeration of styles adds to the slamming excitement of the quartet's neveau-hardcore sound. The vocal attack led by front-man Andrew Schwab has smooth rhythmic flow without being overly hip hop influenced. Place that over the subtle nuances of Randy Torres' riff laden guitar sound and the groove-heavy bottom-end of drummer Alex Albert and bassist Steven Dail and P86 are ready to make an impact in the pits. Helping to add to the aggressive edge of the album was producer Bryan Carlstrom (Biohazard, Anthrax, White Zombie, Jane's Addiction). P86's lyrics effect the soul as much as the music drives the body. Typical of many hardcore influenced bands the album takes a long, hard look at life and the struggles within each of our daily routines and how to survive and overcome. The street-wise edge of the words drives the point home with poignant examples of urban life and personal struggle along with a heartfelt Christian message. The words join with the music in a bond of sheer mayhem created to move bodies and minds alike in ways they have never been moved before. So call it controlled musical aggression. Call it progressive sounding hardcore. Call it new-school metal with a twist. Call it whatever you want because Project 86 are all about making the listener reconsider what the true power of music is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Hard-core, February 3, 2000

Well just to lay it on the line this is the most awesome hard-core album I have ever listened to. I have had the cd for over a year and I can still listen to it with out getting bored. The song "sirens" has got to be my all time favorite. I love the way they can make their songs so hard and keep it christian and clean. Some of the lyrics on the songs are so thought provoking I think anyone christian or secular would understand what they are saying. they get the point across and do it to the best music ever so if you are looking for something hard and clean this is it.
