Book Description

July 1, 2003 Nikki Turner Original
Tressa is a fly girl accustomed to the lavish lifestyle that her possessive, deranged, baby's daddy, Lucky, has provider her with. In order to keep her high post standards of living, she has excused so many of his unforgivable actions. It is not until he pulls off the ultimate stunt that she realizes that no mink coat, car, house or any amount of money is worth her peace of mind. Never blinking or thinking twice, Tressa leaves everything behind, with the exception of her street savvy, and sets out to make a life of her own, one that would be filled with hard times and even harder luck. Tressa soon finds herself making the transition from public figure to public assistance. Every day of her life seems like one drama-filled chapter after another. From the baby daddy drama, to the backstabbing friends, to the various unforgettable men she sorts through and disposes of. There will be times she has to struggle and scramble just to make ends meet, and other times when she will stand tall and hold her own. In this captivating tale, Tressa's voyage will expose readers to a side of a struggling single mother that has yet to be revealed to them Nikki Turner, the best selling author of A Hustler's Wife, once again will take readers on a safari through the jungle of the fierce and stormy streets, leaving readers on the edge of their seats begging for an encore.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

The Princess of ''Hip Hop Fiction'' is crowned Nikki. She brings a mellow swing to the genre with her debut title A Hustler's Wife. Only a couple of months on the shelves, A Hustler's Wife ranked #2 on the Essence Magazine Bestseller's list. Nikki's instant success was no fluke. It's been #1 ever since. Nikki Turner is a gutsy, gifted, courageous new voice taking the urban literary community by storm with her realistic characters, plots and settings. She is a self-accomplished writer, initially penning short stories before trying her hand at this debut novel. Nikki developed a love for writing when her seventh grade English teacher gave her a journal. She started a life-long habit of putting her thoughts and feelings onto paper, which she still does to this very day.

2.0 out of 5 stars I hope Nikki Turner reads this!!!, July 26, 2004

This review is from: A Project Chick (Nikki Turner Original) (Paperback)
Nikki....I can't believe you let these books out of the house (Hustler's Wife & Project Chick).

As a native Richmonder, it was great to read about my home city. It made me smile (and reminisce) when the author referenced certain streets and areas....they actually exist! The storyline was so-so, not really all that believeable but it was OK. In the THANK YOU section, the author actually thanks the editors. What for? This book was so littered with mistakes, I find it hard to believe that it was edited at all. These (many, many) errors actually de-value the entire book. Miss Turner, you have a huge audience, please respect and appreciate our intelligence and support of your work.....INVEST IN PROFESSIONAL EDITORS. Anything less is a direct reflection on you. As for the comments stating that it's the printer's fault....the printer will print what they have been given. It's not the printer's responsibility to correct mistakes, it's the author's and editor's job. The author ultimately gives the last OK for the final print.....typos, errors, and all. My advice to you Nikki.....read YOUR book before sending it to the printer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Job Well Done for 2nd Time Out, February 18, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Project Chick (Nikki Turner Original) (Paperback)
Everyone knows there is always a lot of pressure when putting out a second book, CD, etc., when the first one did so well. That being said, I have to applaud Nikki Turner for a job well done. Nikki is obviously a writer with great talent and insight into her characters and the community she is writing about. I commend her for bringing their stories to the forefront. A Project Chick is clearly one such story. I just finished the book and thought it was an intelligent approach to a street story. No one else has "represented" for the single moms the way that she has done in this book. Clearly, Nikki Turner writes directly to her audience, which are people from the hood and not corporate boardrooms. That is what makes her writing so good, she can relate to her readers. The book moves at a steady pace but the end was well worth the ride. This book is funny as hell and it's the kind you can easily read on your commute or right before you go to bed. I'm proud to know that such a young author is taking a risk by writing this kind of material and doing a damn good job. What the other two reviewers missed in the editing of the book is that the vocabulary has a street/slang/ebonic flow. The characters are not going to sound like they were raised in a white suburb. Even though it may have appeared to be bad editing, Nikki was keeping the vernacular true to the characters. I can't wait for the third novel and whatever else she writes because I know it will be good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Calling All Project Chicks!, March 2, 2005
By
This review is from: A Project Chick (Nikki Turner Original) (Paperback)
This book is for you. It was written specifically for you and about you. I don't know who else that can relate to this garbage! The plot was BLAH, the characters were BLAH, and the editing was BLAH BLAH BLAH and BLAH. I think at one point the author forgot whether she was writing in first person or third! My God! NIKKI, baby do you have your stuff edited? I wish I knew someone I could refer you to because your publishing company is just throwing you in the fire with gasoline underwear on!!!!!!!!!!
