Amazon.com Product Description

From the creators of Tomb Raider comes a new science-fiction action-adventure game. The planet has become severely overpopulated and society has moved into huge tower-cities, each inhabited by millions of people. You control a team of four members of an elite force called the Urban Protection Agency as they investigate a bizarre equipment malfunction at the Real Meat factory. They soon discover a much more serious problem.

The four characters are Carter, the squad leader; Minoko, the computer expert; Andre, the engineer; and Amber, the robot. Featuring interchangeable first- and third-person viewpoints, gameplay requires close interaction between these characters. Command may be switched between characters and also to remotely operated equipment. Gear includes a hover camera, rover, sentry guns, mines, explosive charges, a "time-shock" weapon that slows time for all but your team members, a mind probe, and a bouncing Frisbee explosive. The team can remote operate cameras, security weapons, doors, and other machinery, plus, as an added feature, the equipment can be regenerated when needed. The game engine is completely different from the one used for the Tomb Raider series, and allows for improved animation systems, mirrored surfaces, bump mapping, environmental bump mapping, gloss mapping, and light mapping.

4.0 out of 5 stars An adventure game with sensible and interesting puzzles, April 2, 2002
This review is from: Project Eden (CD-ROM)
Typically I am not sure what everyone feels the need to write a review, even when they have only played a demo. I guess the most foolish make themselves known. Frankly Project Eden is a quality title, with less of a tomb raider feel than you would expect (Core made both games). If you are a true adventure gamer, this should be the game for you. All team members are useful, since they all have strengths you must utilize continuously in order to progress. The game has an console feel to it, and though the controls are solid it may be take a bit of getting used to for those new to the adventure genre. I would recommend this game to adventure players and anyone trying to get into the genre. This title surely will not dissapoint, in terms of gameplay. Priced reasonably, this is one you should not miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars A much underrated video game reference, July 31, 2001
This review is from: Project Eden (CD-ROM)
The demo I played in May 2001, although short, was very promising. The final game kept absolutely true to this premise.

Project Eden takes place in a not so distant future. It's actually a kind of reverse journey through the strata of our ever-growing urban civilization. Cities are composed of huge skyscrapers built upon older skyscrapers, and never cease to expand upwards. Wealthy people live high above the suburbs, but even there the sunlight is still a rare sight.

The dark graphics of this action/adventure game are smooth, detailed, almost realistic, enhanced with excellent visual effects and eye-catching lighting. You'll come through truly fantastic sets like an old 'Gotham' church flanked with monstrous derelict 'underground' skyscrapers (though they are not really underground per say). The final set is simply overwhelming. The gorgeous sceneries of Project Eden somehow reminded me of Twelve Monkeys, Metropolis, The Fifth Element, Dark City... well, you get the idea.

The sound department is utterly superb. The 3D audio environment provides tremendous feelings of oppression and desolation. Right from the breathtaking title screen, I knew this game would be special as far as sound climax is concerned.

But the most important feature is the gameplay, and Project Eden has plenty of it. Fans of Lara Croft won't be disappointed with this one. The mix between the action and riddle sequences is even more balanced than in Tomb Raider. Despite the fact that the 3D engine (especially the first person view) can strongly recall Deus Ex, let me get this clear right now : adventure is at the core of Project Eden. The twelve levels and their very long play time will keep you busy for a couple of months.

As for the storyline, it is pure SF. Apart from Nightlong and Nomad Soul, it has been a while since we got something as original as this terrible vision of our future. Whatever the megacorps want you to believe, you really don't want to raise a family there...

Too bad this jewel was so underrated. It's the best game I ever played in a very long time. It seems that original games like Project Eden or the splendid Ico on PS2 have a really hard time competing with all the lousy FPS and beat'em all games proliferating out there.

So... Do you like adventure, exploration and sound climax? Give Project Eden a try, I'm sure you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still in my game library, April 1, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Project Eden (CD-ROM)
There are only a few titles I have kept from my PC gaming days and this is one of them. I had a lot of fun with the story and puzzles. The ending was a let down but the rest of the game was pretty solid to me.
