3.0 out of 5 stars Good for questions & answers, but too many errors October 20, 2009
I bought this for the practice exams and the questions with answers at the end of every chapter. The answers at the end of the chapters have been improved over the first edition by repeating the entire question and the possible answers before providing the correct answer with explanation. Unfortunately, the book contains both typographical and substantive errors. I wasted a lot of time trying to understand some concepts or duplicate some answers that proved to be poorly explained or just wrong. Although these problems occur in many chapters, here are a few examples from the Time Management chapter: The difference between total float and free float is muddled by the use of the term "total" in the definition of free float. The practice calculation of critical path and float times on the CD is riddled with errors: The exercise requests a calculation of "available" float, which is not defined either in the book or in the PMBOK guide. Several of the answers provided for float are neither free nor total float, just wrong. The total time calculated for one of the paths is written as "1" instead of "21". Overall, I am unaware of another book with so many practice questions, but the book would have been much better with better quality management.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book! March 1, 2010
I love this book. I am in the middle of a career change and having a degree in management and having had quite a bit of experience with projects, I thought I would venture out and see what Project Management was officially all about. I signed up to take a PMP Prep course and found it using only the PMBOK as the only resource. I feel like I know absolutely nothing, almost dumb. So, I thought, I need to find something more understandable to supplement that book. I found this one and love the simple ways it takes to describe what I feel has become a more complicated process than it needs to. I think this book is worth its weight in gold. The way it ties into each chapter of the PMBOK and explains it in understandable terms. I am very glad I bought it to use as a guide to help with passing the exam and think you will benefit greatly from reading it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book based on PMBOK Guide; I passed the CAPM November 3, 2011
By --d.w.
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Five years ago, I used the CAPM(TM) Certified Associate in Project Management All-in-One Exam Guide to study to obtain my CAPM. Last month, I read (twice) CAPM/PMP Project Management Certification Exam Guide, Second Edition in preparation for renewing my CAPM certification. I also submitted minor errata because this book is worthy of a third edition (and a revised PMBOK and revised certification tests are being prepared).

Joseph Phillips writes in a very readable (often humorous) style. The CD videos also explain concepts in a very understandable manner. This is important because many of the terms and many of the concepts in project management (as contained in the PMBOK Guide) are foreign to many practicing I.T. professionals (Do you know the 8/80 rule or that RAM means Responsibility Assignment Matrix?).

However, a key success factor for complex projects is good project management. The best companies not only have great project managers, they train project team members in the terms, concepts and processes that their projects will use.

Today is a gorgeous day. I prepared well (even recalled earned value formulas) for the CAPM exam. I passed the exam with flying colors and with an hour to spare! Much of my success is due to this excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Tool/Resource July 16, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I used this book to pass the PMI CAPM exam on the first attempt. This book was the only source I used to prepare for the exam. The material is rather dense but the author attempts to keep the reader engaged with his writing style and formatting of this "textbook". I believe this edition does a great job of breaking down the PMBOK into a more managable, readable format.

Steps I took to pass the CAPM exam:
-Read this book cover to cover
-Make the notecards that Philips recommends... You need to know the definitions in all of the chapters
- You must know the 42 process and all of their inputs, outputs as well as the tools and techiniques used in each knowledge area. There are many questions on process inputs/outputs on the CAPM exam.
- Go over the Chapter Summaries and take the end of Chapter Quizzes before you take the exam
- Use the practice exams included in the book. I found these very helpful in preparing me to take the actual exam.
-Learn the EVM formulas as these are easy questions on the real exam if you know the formulas.

Overall I think this is a solid resource to use in preparing for your CAPM certification. I felt compelled to write my first Amazon review after using this book to pass my exam.

Good luck!

2.0 out of 5 stars capm exam September 7, 2012

just took that exam, the exam questions are no where close to the ones in the book, I recommend you to read the PMBOK 4th ed. The book is just too old, and there are a lot of typos in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very valuable tool June 3, 2012
By Cynthia
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I took a very expensive PM course and, at the end, I felt very discouraged. I decided to take the CAPM exam almost a year later, when my application was about to expire. At that time, I came across Mr. Phillips' book at Amazon. I found the information contained in it very comprehensive and easy to read - I followed his guidelines and it worked. I started gaining more and more confidence while going thru the chapters; the frustration and anxiety I felt during the PM course started fading, and taking my CAPM started feeling like a manageable task. I passed the test on my first attempt. After taking the exam, I decided to send an e-mail to my 15 former classmates just to find out that only 2 (besides me) were certified. From my experience, Mr. Phillips book provided me not only with the knowledge to take my CAPM but also with the encouragement to get to it. If I were to take the PMP now, I would probably go over his book and practice tests (and at least chapter 3 of the PMBOK), take a boot camp, and then study his book and take his prep tests again. For my CAPM, only his book and chapter three of the PMBOK were enough.
