3.0 out of 5 stars Overview
The sole weakness of this book is the PMP Exam Simulator. The exam simulator provides no references and no feedback as the questions are answered correctly or incorrectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging, user-friendly book, July 25, 2006

This review is from: PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition (Paperback)
As a newcomer to project management, I was a skeptical about finding a book which would make the subject interesting and approachable. This book does both. Phillips's writing style is lively and engaging - he gives a sense of being with his reader every step of the way. Despite the fact that the book is more than 500 pages long, it is organized well and moves quickly. I was able to keep track of what I was learning through the summaries and key terms at the end of each chapter, along with the extensive glossary and appendix which condenses key ideas for the exam. The self-tests at the end of each chapter also allow the reader to interact with the text and practice what they've learned. After working through these, I felt well-prepared for the exam, as I found out from taking the practice version, included on the CD which comes with the book. Overall, the text is generous in what it offers for the price. It provides an effective, user-friendly approach to preparing for the PMP exam. Elizabeth Lee, Ph.D.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Edition to Stay Up To Date, April 11, 2006
This review is from: PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition (Paperback)
This book is divided into two major sections:

The first section, chapters 1 - 3 give a broad fairly general overview of project management and how it pertains to the PMP examination. ==The second section consists of nine chapters, numbered 4 - 13, cover each of the nine knowledge areas that will be tested as part of the examination.

The overall basis for the PMP test is the PMBOK (Project Management Body Of Knowledge). That's a standard, and like most standards it is written to be precise and definite. That means it reads like a lawyer wrote it, absolutely correct and almost unreadable. Great for helping you go to sleep. This book, on the otherhand is written to help you understand what you need to learn for the test. Finally the book contains simulated exam questions that match the tone, format, topics and difficulty of the real exam.

In addition there is a CD supplied with the book that has a testing engine with a full practice exam to test yourself and the questions have detailed answers with explanations.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is 'THE' Roadmap to your PMP Certification, January 17, 2007
By

This review is from: PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition (Paperback)
Prior to my privilege of attending Mr. Phillips' Bootcamp class, I read the PMBOK on my own; too long, too hard, too BORING.

During his class however, we utilized this book, his book. It was an invaluable Roadmap right through the PMBOK. He breaks down that PMBOK into corresponding, comprehensible chapters. EVERYTHING is explained in simplistic terminology.

He also gets you into the test-taking 'mind set' by providing hundreds of questions (25 per chapter), & their answers, with explainations.

Bottom line, if you want 'PMP' AFTER your name, this book comes BEFORE the test. You will be totally prepared, and there will be no surprises.

This book is the best PMP Exam Prep study guide I have found. It is packed with useful information, targeted directly at passing the PMP Certification exam. The practice exam questions are excellent, the explanation of the answers well written, and a reference to the PMBOK is included with each question. The book includes a CD with a full PMP exam (many similar books charge extra for this) and the ability to download a second exam for no additional charge. The book is much less expensive than others that offer not nearly as much. As a PMP certified project manager and instructor of PMP exam prep courses, I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide for PMP Exam, April 12, 2007
By

This review is from: PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition (Paperback)
I used this book and Paul Sanghera's Study Guide exclusively for studying for the PMP exam and passed on the first try. This book covers the nine knowledge areas with enough depth that you actually learn something rather than just memorize lists. You must to understand both the knowledge areas and process groups fully in order to pass the exam. Read this book first as it is easier to read than Sanghera's Study Guide. Then read Paul Sanghera's Study Guide to understand the ITTOs of the process groups as these are very important on the exam. Stay away from Rita's books unless you want to be convinced you will fail!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahmed Abushaban, August 30, 2007
This review is from: PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition (Paperback)
This is a great book. This book covers 100% of the materials on the PMP Exam. Some of the questions on the PMP Exam comes from materials outside if the PMBOK. This book covers EVERYTHING on the PMP Exam. The questions at the end of the chapters are challenging and very well written. Knowing everthing in this book Plus reviewing the Input, methodologies, and output in the PMBOK will give you an excellent chance of Passing the PMP Exam. With the help of this book, I passed the PMP exam. This Book can help you too. I would like to thank the author and the Publishing company for a GREAT book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best PMP Study Book on the Market, December 21, 2007
This review is from: PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition (Paperback)
This study guide is very easy to read and it prepares you 100% for the PMP exam. Prior to reading this book, I was in the dark about all that I needed to know to pass the exam. After reading it, passing the exam seemed much more achievable and straightforward.

The practice exams at the end of the chapters give you instant feedback on how prepared you are.

After reading this book and taking the practice tests over and over, you can take your exam with confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Preparation for Passing the PMP Exam, January 16, 2007
This review is from: PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition (Paperback)
I obtain this book through a PMP Bootcamp that has a 99% passing ration. The key to passing the exam is plenty of pracitice exams, of which this books is full of. If you can take each exam at the end of each chapter and pass above an 80% you are most likely going to pass. Each chapter is set up to guide you through the imporant topics introduced through the PMBOK guide. The author also has a web site which you can download more practice exam questions once you register you book. I would just keep the mind set that this book is to prepare you to pass the exam, and some of the methodologies to answering exam questions are not likely solutions in the real world. I think this book is a great alternative if you can't also go to a prep course, of which the aurthor offers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Your only choice., September 9, 2006
This review is from: PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition (Paperback)
The PMI approach in general is complicated for the sake of being complicated. It reminds me of the IT guys I used to work with. Rather than just give a straight answer, they couch everything in a wordy overly descriptive soliloquy in order to seem important and smart. In the same way, the PMI took a relatively straightforward discipline such as Project Management and analyzed and 'decompressed' it to death in an attempt to seem scientific - in order to appear more impressive and legitimate. Well, if all of these corporate giants buy into it, we have no choice but to learn it and live it. And if you have to pass the PMP cert. test, this is the book you should be reading. NOTE: avoid the Dummies book like the plague.
