Review

Helpful, but idealistic., August 27, 2007
By Laura

I thought the book had many useful ideas for organizing my house, family, and schedule. My biggest complaint was it isn't realistic. I have four kids under 8 and some days I am good just to get them out the door in matching clothes. I think some ideas were helpful, while others I will store in my 'someday' files. Meaning, someday I may be at a point in my life to get to that. Overall, it was well written and helpful, if not pertinent to my specific time in life.

Very good book on not only how to organize your life, but how to organize everything. Marie Ricks breaks down everything you will need to know to get your life in order.

More About the Author

Marie has been sharing home and professional organization skills for more than 20 years now. She began teaching in 1986 at the local community education center where she developed an eight-week, sixteen-topic course including personal organization, time management, food preparation, office and storage organization, budgeting, training children and employees to work, and purchasing skills.

Her classes have proven popular both in California and Utah, where she now lives. She frequently teaches organization principles at professional and community gatherings. She also does personal consultations where she has seen a lot of unkempt offices, cluttered closets, and stacks of untidy paperwork, all of which is very exciting for her to organize.

Marie is a presenter at professional and educational venues all over the United States and has published a HOUSE OF ORDER HANDBOOK that contains chapters on many facets of organization plus numerous worksheets to make running a home or small business easier at all levels.

PROJECT ORGANIZATION, QUICK & EASY WAYS TO ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE and ORGANIZE AS YOU GO address personal, home, and family organization skills.

ORGANIZED FOR A MISSION, A GUIDE FOR PARENTS AND MISSIONARIES speaks to the needs of young L.D.S. missionaries and their parents.

BE SUCCESSFUL IN SCHOOL - A STUDENT'S GUIDE FOR JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL helps young people find answers to academic success.

She has also prepared additional printed materials to help home managers and professionals get more organized, whatever their needs may be. She has made good use of her personal library that now totals over 300 personal, family, home, and business organization books as she shares valuable and workable ideas in her classes, presentations, and writing.

Marie also writes for various venues, and appears as a featured guest on both TV and radio. She has been a radio show host and is the owner of HOUSE OF ORDER, a company dedicated to helping men and women everywhere find greater organization skills, both in their personal and professional lives. She shares a weekly organization newsletter for interested parties. Sign up on her informative and useful web page, www.houseoforder.com.

Marie also has interests in many other areas. She loves to scrap quilt, make pressed-flower greeting cards for friends and family, and write personal histories.

She is happily married to Jim Ricks and together they are the parents of five sons. Tom is a Math Education professor at Louisiana State University, David is attending medical school at Ohio State University, Brian is a computer science doctoral candidate at Brigham Young University (and a new husband to Jennifer), and Tyler is pursuing a degree in animation. (Evan, their youngest, passed away as a young child from leukemia.)

Marie and her husband live in Highland, Utah where she and her husband grow a vegetable and fruit garden as their summer hobby and share wood-working projects together on colder days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did your mom only make you take the trash out?, January 5, 2008
This review is from: Project: Organization (Paperback)
Did your mom do all of the house work and not teach you?
Mine did. I took out the trash, and cleaned the bathroom once in a while. I just did not learn the skills.
I love to have a clean home, but it just did not come naturally to me.
I enjoyed Marie's lecture series and love her book "House of Order Handbook, The Best Way to an Organized Life." She has a great web site that goes with these books also.

Marie spends a lot of time in homes as a professional consultant. She has seen the messes that people are harboring. She talks to women like me who desire order. They just did not previously have the tools, systems and routines to keep their homes in the kind of condition they would like it to be in.
Marie told us at our class one day that the Super Moms are only 10 percent more organized than most of us. I am finding that she is right. She has taught me how to better use my time and get more from it.

Marie breaks the tasks down and makes getting organized managable.
Marie is that trusted friend that we all need to help us get through the mess. Your life got messy over time and Marie helps you to get through it over time.

Hooray for Marie! Thank you Marie for helping me to change the way that I think about organization. Thank you for helping me to restructure my routines and be more efficient. Thank you for helping me do what my mother could not.
I hope that you enjoy her books!

Marianne

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, Concise, Motivating, January 16, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Project: Organization (Paperback)
"Organization is a process, not a product." This book helps the reader understand the process. Marie gives directions for simple projects to tackle one at a time (such as creating an efficient "spares" box) to help you develop habits of an organized life. Her chapter titles (such as "pick it up, don't pass it by") stick with you, reminding you of your weekly goal.

If you already have all the principles of this book down, you probably don't need an organization book.
