4.0 out of 5 stars Pantera in the hair metal era, February 17, 2011
This review is from: Projects In The Jungle (Audio CD)
Just about every metal fan knows the name Pantera. The Texas-based band was a huge metal presence in the `90s. In a decade when metal's popularity was in decline, the heavy, thrashing Pantera became almost a household name. What's less well-known is that the band had been active since the early `80s, recording a series of albums in the glam/hair metal style before releasing their 1990 breakthrough Cowboys From Hell.

Originally released in 1984, Projects in the Jungle was the band's second album. Like 1983's Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle is essentially a glam metal album. The young band was clearly influenced by KISS, as well as some of the flashier L.A. bands. They sound a bit like Keel and King Kobra here. If you're a glam metal fan, this is actually a pretty good album. The songs are cheesy, but the guitar work is pretty sweet and the production is worlds better than the debut. Terry Glaze's high-pitched wailing takes some getting used to, though. Like all the early Pantera albums, Projects in the Jungle has some very cheesy, very amateur cover artwork.

If you're a fan of Pantera's later, more popular albums hoping for more of the same, you're in for a shock with these early releases. Projects in the Jungle is much more likely to appeal to hair metal fans and serious collectors of obscure `80s era hard rock and heavy metal. If that's you, then this is an album that's well worth hearing.

NOTE: Projects in the Jungle was never officially released on CD, and it's doubtful that it ever will. What you're looking at here is a bootleg, which is fine if you just want to hear the album. Just make sure you know what you're getting and don't pay some "collectors" price for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The next album from a very well known band, February 10, 2011

This review is from: Projects In The Jungle (Audio CD)
Okay, so I am going to explain the next album in Pantera's lifetime, the 1984's Projects In The Jungle. This album was more on the heavy metal side than the previous album, Metal Magic, which was on the more glam metal side. At least with this album, most of the songs weren't mostly about having girlfriends, making love, etc. Terry Glaze's vocals have changed a lot since Metal Magic, but there is a lot more high pitched screaming with this album, but like I said in the review of the previous album, you have to listen to the instrumentals because that's what really matters. I'm not saying that Terry Glaze was a bad singer, but it's just the phase the band was in that made the combination awful. So let's get on with the songs. The songs are actually a lot better than their previous album, I liked the songs Heavy Metal Rules, the title track, All Over Tonight, Out For Blood, and Killers. So I think I will go on to the next album, "I Am The Night." (even though I got a 2 in 1 cd that has both this album and that album, I will still review it.)
