Jazz from hell??, December 24, 2005
This review is from: Projekct Three - Masque (Audio CD)
Unlike all the other ProjeKcts, P3 isn't just live imdustrial jazz compiled into an album; P3 is additionally processed, using the actual live concerts as raw material for this album. As a result, this album is somewhat less honest a document, but more valid as an album: Pat Mastelotto took on the role of digital DJ and reformed the live material into thirteen tracks of highly listenable sounds. Consequently, we need not be concerned with how things might have sounded on any of the three nights that went into this recording -- any brown moments, or how the sets might have gone. This record is an independent achievement, assembled from the best bits and 'improved' in any way that Mastelotto saw fit.
The result is Fripp's favorite of the ProjeKcts. Wildly creative, deeply layered, and randomly assembled, Mastelotto intends for us to choose our own listening sequence. Consequently any listener is likely to find ProjeKct Three a rewarding listen for a long time to come, as it can be reassembled into a variety of different experiences.
Admittedly, whether you even want to listen to improvised industrial music in the first place is necessarily assumed; fans of Janet Jackson wouldnt' be touching this with a ten-foot pole to begin with. For those wishing to hear the cutting edge, however, P3 has more than its share of stimulating fare -- though it may take a few listens to appreciate it :-)
