5.0 out of 5 stars Demonstration-quality sound and a great Romeo and Juliet Suite, October 17, 2005

This review is from: Prokofiev: Classical Symphony / Romeo & Juliet - Suite No. 2 / Love for Three Oranges Suite (Audio CD)
Oh, if only Temirkanov had been allowed by RCA to conduct the complete Romeo and Juliet ballet! His reading of Suite #2 is half an hour of the most sublime music-amking. And thanks to Tony Faulkner, the now legendary British digital engineer who went to St. Petersburg in 1991 to record this CD, the sound is incredibly fresh, warm, and natural. There are other sonic blockbuster versions of Romeo and Juliet excerpts, notably by Salonen and Abbado, both with the Berlin Phil., but they sound bombastic compared to this marvelous disc. Temirkanov's conducting soars beyond their efforts, also.

The rest is less significant, a middle-of-the-road Classical Sym. and a sharp, satisfying Love for Three Oranges Suite. It's the Romeo and Juliet that is so stunning; one of a kind in the current catalog.
