The only saving grace of this latest release of The Stone Flower is the superb performance of the incomparable husband/wife team of Maximova and Vasiliev.Unfortunately, darkness prevails throughout the entire video, obscuring many fine dances by the the Corps as well as the principals. That is a shame, as this is a fine ballet, what was the lighting director thinking? Stage and set design were dark and gloomy as well. The Mistress of the Copper Mountain, danced by Svetlana Adirkhaeva, was artistically sound, but technically weak. Her jetes, lifts and control, were tentative, but then maybe she couldn't see all that well in the darkness. In general,if you want to see Katia and Volodya at their usual best, this performance is a must for those who remember them in their glory as I do.I give this production Five++++ stars for their performance alone.

The Stone Flower is a simple but beautiful folk tale with beautiful, simple effective music by the great Sergei Prokofiev and here in a triumphantly recast choreography of Yuri Grigorovich. This version is the original 1959 version when Grigorovich directed it at the Bolshoi and the cast was headed by the husband wife team of Ekatrina Maximova (Katerina) and Vladimir Vasiliev (Danila). This ballet was part of the program that in that year toured the United States to great acclaim. In 1979 this same version was redone at the Bolshoi with the same two stars: Maximova and Vasiliev. This performance was recorded then but not released until 2007. At the time of the performance Vasiliev (Danila) was 39 years old and Maximova (Katerina) was 40.
Stone Flower (Kamenni Tsvetok) has grown into one of my most favorite ballets. I have three DVD versions and each has it's particular merits. In this recording we have two great artists of the great blossoming of the Bolshoi ballet into a world leader in a reprieve of one of their great performances: Stone Flower. Vasiliev is the Danila and he is a nimble but solidly built, manly partner as favored by the Bolshoi over the more agile, lithe premier danseur of the Marinski. His many lifts and holds of the Mistress of the Copper Mountain are steady, sturdy and effortlessly done. He is as agile as any one half his age. His leaps are clean and accurate and he can certainly get around the stage in a hurry. If it weren't for the occasional close up of his face, the audience would think of him as the young Danila. Vasiliev is considered one of the all time great artists of the ballet stage as is his wife Maximova and this DVD is a valuable legacy of those esteemed dansers.
